Closed for Beef Days

The library will be closing at 2 p.m. on Friday, July 15, and will be closed all day on Saturday, July 16, so that all may participate in the Solon Beef Days celebration.


Solon schools begin registration process

SOLON– For the 2011-12 school year, Solon Community Schools will be once again be using an e-registration process accessible through PowerSchool. As part of this process, letters with new access IDs were sent to all families in July 2010.  This is the same login information parents of middle school and high school students use to check grades via PowerSchool.  Parents of kindergarten students will be mailed access IDs and passwords the week of July 18. 


Weets-Caudill’s calf honors soldiers’ sacrifice

SOLON– The Solon Library Foundation’s Calf Classic’s fourth calf titled “Hooves on the Ground: a lifetime of freedom fighters,” was sponsored by Savvy Coffee and Wine Bar. This calf was created to honor American soldiers and their sacrifices. “Hooves on the Ground,”  designed by artist Barbara Weets-Caudill, is a portrayal of American conflicts since World War I.  


Solon soon to be puttering around on golf carts

SOLON– Within a month, residents of Solon should be able to hop on a golf cart and drive around town.
Last week, the members of the Solon City Council approved the first reading of a new ordinance to allow golf carts as a street-legal means of transportation within the city limits.
If approved twice more, the new law could go on the books in August.
Discussion on the proposed ordinance began last month, with the council members reviewing existing ordinances from a number of neighboring communities, as well as state code.


A once in a lifetime opportunity

SOLON– Bill Zenishek’s day started at 3 a.m. By the time he made it back to the Solon Care Center some 21 hours later, he had been to Washington, D.C. and back; and had seen most if not all of the nation’s war memorials and monuments.
Zenishek was on an Honor Flight, a chartered special taking veterans, primarily from World War II, on the trip of a lifetime.

Matt Gatens and Jordan Stoermer have been teammates or opponents most of their lives.
Matt grew up in Iowa City learning to play basketball while Jordan was raised in Coralville where he learned the game.
They became teammates in fourth grade, playing on a team coached by their dads, Mike Gatens and Mike Stoermer.
“I think very early Matt and Jordan both stood out and had great success at that particular time and it was fun to watch,” said Mike Stoermer.
“I was usually the two guard and he usually played the three,” said Jordan. “We had a couple of big guys and point guard around us.”


Robert Touchberry Sr.

Robert W. Touchberry Sr., 89, of Ely, died Wednesday, June 29, 2011, at his home. Services were held July 6 at First Presbyterian Church near Ely. Burial followed in Rogers Grove Cemetery, rural Ely.

Peggy M. Organ, 75, of Solon, died Monday, July 4, 2011, at the Solon Nursing Care Center.


Whitey Ford

L. Whitey Ford, 80, of Coralville, died peacefully Tuesday, July 5, 2011, at home surrounded by his family.
Memorial services celebrating his life were held July 8 at Lensing’s Oak Hill, with Rev. Maurie Campbell officiating. Inurnment was at the Oakland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Iowa City Elks Club General Fund.
