Margaret Looney

Margaret Looney, 103, formerly of Ely, died Sunday, Aug. 7, 2011, at Sienna Crest Assisted Living, Marshall, Wis. Services were held Aug. 12 at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Interment was at Rogers Grove Cemetery, Ely. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home was entrusted with arrangements.

Paul Ehmsen

Paul Daniel Ehmsen, 47, of Coralville, formerly of Mount Vernon, lost his battle with alcoholism Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2011. A gathering of family and friends was held Aug. 13 at Morgan Funeral and Cremation Choices, Mount Vernon. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date.

Food For Thought

I’ve never quite understood the difference between policies and rules, though there must be some distinction or we wouldn’t need both words. Policies, I’ve always felt, were intended to make decisions simple. If the company policy dictates that everyone must wear a uniform to work, then everyone is spared the trouble of deciding what to wear. Policies can also apply to the public that the company deals with. Take those return policies at department stores. Individual sales clerks and cashiers are not required to make judgment calls about returns and refunds.

Walkin'

The kitten’s injuries were severe.
The backhoe operator never saw her until it was too late. It wasn’t his fault; there were no signs of a cat’s den. But while a lot of men would have tossed the black ball of fur aside, this one took the time to scoop the wisp of life up and call the police, who in turn got it to the local veterinary clinic, the same clinic were my spouse, Sabra, works.
