Berniece Young

Berniece A. Young, 90, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2011, at St. Luke’s Hospital after a brief illness. Services will be Saturday, Sept. 17, 3 p.m., at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, by the Rev. Paul Minx. Burial will be at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday, Sept. 16, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.
She is survived locally by her son, Richard and Audrey Young of Swisher.

Kathy Ann Symonette, 78, of Cedar Rapids, died Sept. 1, 2011, at West Ridge Care Center following an extended illness. There was a memorial service to celebrate Kathy’s life Sept. 9 at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. There was a private burial in Swisher at Anderson Cemetery.
Local survivors include daughter Cindy (Paul) Hills of Swisher; and grandchildren Hunter, Annie, and Walker Hills.


Rosetta Sylvia Cerny Seery

Rosetta Sylvia Cerny Seery, 90, of Cedar Rapids, died at her home of cancer Friday, Sept. 9, 2011. Services were held Tuesday, Sept. 13, at St. Jude Catholic Church by the Rev. Mark Reasoner with military services by the American Legion Post 727. Burial was at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Solon.


Charles Mick

Charles Robert “Bob” Mick, 69, of Palo, died Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha, following a brief illness. Funeral Mass was held Sept. 9, at St. Jude’s Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by Father Jon Seda. Burial was at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Local survivors include his son Patrick (Carrie) Mick, Ely.


Joyce Huedepohl

Joyce Ann Huedepohl died Thursday, Sept. 1, 2011, at Mercy Iowa City following a sudden illness at the age of 78 years. Celebration of Life service was held Sept. 6, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Conroy. Pastor Gary Sears officiated. Burial was in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery.


Wilma Elaine Heidtke

Wilma Elaine Heidtke, 87, of Austin, Minn., died Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011 at Mercy Hospice in Iowa City. Funeral Services were held Monday, Sept. 12, at First United Methodist Church in Austin, Minn. Burial followed in Oakwood Cemetery.


Dale Gates

Dale M. Gates, 83, of New Hampton, died Friday morning, Sept. 2, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Sept. 7, at Holy Family Parish - St. Joseph Center, New Hampton. Interment was at St. Mary’s Cemetery, New Hampton.
He is survived locally by a daughter, Sue Gates of North Liberty.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Elaine; and one brother, Keith Gates.

Dianne Carter

M. Dianne Carter, 70, of New London, died Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011, at her home after a courageous battle with breast cancer.
She was born Dec. 12, 1940, in Burlington, the daughter of Russel “Butch” and Dorothy Wasson Warth. On Nov. 22, 1959, she married William (Bill) Carter at the Presbyterian Church in New London. She was a New London High School and an American Institute of Business graduate. She was a member of the New London Presbyterian Church.
Dianne is survived locally by a son, Gary (Darla) Carter of Solon.


Walkin'

After a relaxing night at Marquette State Park, we headed out Monday morning for the return trip to Alton. This time the ride was immensely more enjoyable than our ride up; the temperature dropped, a tail wind greeted, us a breakfast was served and weekend traffic disappeared, leaving the four lane highway with extra-wide shoulders to us and the occasional commuter.


Food For Thought

We don’t hear much about the proverbial dog days of August and early September in recent years. As a child, I heard quite a bit about them during those last hot days before we finally got a little relief and began to see signs that fall was actually on its way. To my childish mind, those “dog days” manifested themselves in the image of panting dogs digging cooling holes in the flower beds on the shady side of the garage, snoozing away hot afternoons with flies buzzing around their heads, waiting for the cool of the evenings and the onset of true fall weather.
