Coaches and referees needed for soccer and flag football

SOLON– The Solon Parks and Recreation department is looking for coaches for its upcoming fall soccer and flag football programs. Parents, relatives and high school students are all welcome to help coach. No experience is required. Without coaches, the programs cannot happen. In appreciation of your help the head coach will be reimbursed for one child’s registration. In addition, the Solon Parks and Recreation department is looking for referees and officials.


Veteran’s memorial breakfast Sept. 18

SOLON– The Solon American Legion will hold a veteran’s memorial breakfast on Sunday, Sept.18, from 7:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Legion.
The all-you-can-eat menu includes: pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits and gravy, hash browns, juice, coffee and milk at a cost of only $7 for adults and $4 for children ages 6-12. Children under five eat free.
All proceeds go to the Solon Veteran’s Memorial fund.


Solon KCs host breakfast Sept. 11

SOLON– The Solon Knights of Columbus will be hosting an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast, Sunday, Sept. 11, at St. Mary Catholic Church Parish Hall from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. The cost is $6 for adults, 12 and under $4, under age 4 eat free.


Auxiliary Spaghetti Supper For Scholarships Sept. 7

SOLON– The annual Spaghetti Supper For Scholarships will be held along with the 2011 Homecoming Parade on Wednesday, Sept. 7. The spaghetti supper will be held at Solon American Legion Club, serving from 5-7 p.m. Adults are $7, children ages 6-12, $4, and children under five eat free.
All proceeds are used toward scholarships for graduating seniors. The event is sponsored by Solon American Legion Auxiliary.

I missed my first home football opener in 30 YEARS!
My nephew Kasey decided to get married last Saturday and since he married a great young lady (Rachael) I decided to go to Kalamazoo, Michigan… a five-hour drive (six if you get lost like my brother Arne and I did).
I did tell my two nieces, Robyn and Kym, that there are seven days I hope they don’t get married on… home football weekends. They schedule these games two years in advance so…
We stayed in this really cool bed and breakfast called the Kalamazoo House.


Therese Spaight

Therese Spaight, 93, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, Aug. 26, 2011, at the Hiawatha Care Center. Funeral Mass was held Aug. 29 at All Saints Catholic Church, with the Rev. David O’Connor officiating. Burial was in St. John’s Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Local survivors include daughter Karen (Dan) Wright of Swisher; andgrandchildren Megan Wright and Danielle Wright.


Norma Kean

Norma Jean (Steffen) Kean, 70, of Cascade, passed away peacefully Saturday, Aug. 27, 2011, surrounded by family at Shady Rest Care Center in Cascade.
Services were held Aug. 30 at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Cascade, with the Rev. Douglas Loecke officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Cascade.
Norma was born Feb. 26, 1941, in Cascade, daughter of Sylvester and Marie (Lehman) Steffen. Norma attended St. Mary’s Catholic School.


Alton Johnson

Alton C. “AC” Johnson, 92, lifetime resident of the Iowa City area, died Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011, at Mercy Iowa City. He was cremated at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City.
AC Johnson was born Nov. 30, 1918, in rural Johnson County, the son of Clay and Neva (Zager) Johnson. He was married to Betty Jean Yeslinek on Nov. 8, 1960, until her death in 1979. He married Karen Marie Graef on July 7, 1986, in Iowa City.


Christine Humphries

Christine Louise Humphries, 56, of Solon, died Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2011, at her home. Funeral services were held Sept. 4 at the Coralville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Doug Williams officiating. Private graveside services will be held at a later date.
