Field position turns after events center turf battle

SOLON– Solon sports are in the limelight, especially football. The teams have a target on their backs– everybody wants to take down the Spartans this year.
But that doesn’t explain the field position of the stadium that the four-time state champ football squad will play in next year.
Solon’s proposed Outdoor Events Center (OEC) is looking at a fierce opponent—time. A lack of funds may force the school board into making some tough calls in the next few months.

Rasmussen running solo for mayor

SOLON– Of the four elected city posts to be decided this November, only one will involve a contested race.
Incumbent Mark Krall, appointed to fill a vacated term, will face Chuck Panzer for a two-year term on the Solon City Council.
Two other council seats, both four-year terms, will be sought by Ron Herdliska and incumbent Brad Kunkel.
Council member Cami Rasmussen is the only candidate for mayor in the Nov. 8 general election, seeking to replace Rick Jedlicka, who announced last month he would not seek another term.

County to amend code to address home businesses

JOHNSON COUNTY– In October, the extensions on conditional use permits for Dick Schwab’s Celebration Barn and Mary Ellen Hill’s Gazebo on the Green will end.
The attention garnered by the two rural business ventures in this corner of Johnson County has had people wondering; what’s acceptable practice when carrying out a business in the unincorporated areas of the county?
For most, the answer lies somewhere in the county’s written code. For these two businesses, with their unique services offered in distinctive settings, the code lacks clarity.

Four to run in city council election Nov. 8

NORTH LIBERTY–North Liberty voters will go to the polls Nov. 8 to elect three people to the North Liberty City Council. The terms of current council members Coleen Chipman, Terry Donahue and Chris Hoffman will expire in December 2011.
The City of North Liberty received petitions from all three incumbents hoping for re-election, as well as one additional candidate intending to run on the Nov. 8 ballot. Newcomer Matt Zacek has thrown his hat into the ring, leaving four candidates to vie for the three available seats.

Hawk Talk

By Don Lund
Sports Writer

I’ve got to admit I was a little nervous last Saturday when the Hawkeyes hosted the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks.
When you meet a team that plays a junk defense and runs the spread offense, anything can happen.
A turnover or a blown coverage and you could be looking at a major upset.
Not so fast, my friends.
The Hawkeyes not only opened up their offense, which made Mike Evans happy, but the defense played solid in a 45-17 blowout.
Mike, who has 35 years coaching experience (in his mind), was pushing for the no-huddle offense and he got it on the opening drive.
