Benjie Snitker

Benjie A. Snitker, 85, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Center Point and Palo, died at St. Luke’s Hospital Monday, Dec. 5, 2011. Services were held Dec. 9 at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories by Pastor Lenny Power of the Brandon Church of Christ. Interment was in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors.
Local survivors include his daughter, Kim (Brook) Peterson of Swisher.


Vivian Mowry

Vivian (Schultz) Mowry, 92, of Lost Nation, passed away Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011, at the Colonial Manor of Amana. A celebration of her life service was held Dec. 8 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Lost Nation. Burial was in the Massillon cemetery, Massillon.
Vivian was born on Jan. 22, 1919, in Lost Nation, the daughter of Edward R. and Anna (Andreson) Schultz. She grew up on a farm northwest of Lost Nation and graduated from Lost Nation High School in 1936. She worked in Lost Nation as a homemaker with her aunt and took care of school teachers that boarded at homes.


Robert Martinson

Robert O. Martinson, 83, of Williamsburg, died Friday, Dec. 2, 2011, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Funeral services were held Dec. 6 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Homestead, with the Rev. Terry Small officiating. Burial was in East York cemetery, rural Williamsburg. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, is in charge of arrangements.
Local survivors include Nick Martinson of Ely.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Bertha (Witte) Martinson; a son, Dale in 1982; and three brothers, Raymond, Alfred and Ralph Martinson.


Betty Louvar

“Betty” Louvar, 86, of rural North Liberty, died peacefully Monday, Dec. 5, 2011, at her home following a long illness, with the supported care of Iowa City Hospice, surrounded by her loving family.
Funeral services were held Dec. 8 at the Shueyville United Methodist Church, with burial following at the Shueyville cemetery. Memorial donations may be made in her memory to Shueyville United Methodist Church or the Christian Appalachian Fund. Online condolences may be sent through the website at www.gayandciha.com.


Elizabeth Hill

Elizabeth “Betty” Hill, 86, of the Meth-Wick Community, Cedar Rapids, formerly of Keene, N.H., died Friday, Dec. 2, 2011, in her home. Her body has been cremated without services.
Local survivors include a daughter, Susan (Marvin) Schmitt of Solon.


Norma Grimm

Norma Lucille Grimm, 91, of West Branch, died Dec. 4, 2011, at Crestview Nursing and Rehab Center.
Funeral Services were held Dec. 7 at the Bethany Lutheran Church in West Branch. Burial was in Greenwood cemetery, Muscatine.


Margaret Ellison

Margaret “Maggie” Quinn Ellison, 67, of Mount Vernon, died peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2011, in her home. Her funeral service was held Dec. 10 at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church.
Maggie was born in Cedar Rapids on May 21, 1944, to Blair and Ethel (Colton) Quinn. In 1966 she married high school classmate Bill Ellison. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Jeanette.
Local survivors include children Vince (Tara) Ellison and children Kate, Leah and Isaac Quinn of North Liberty, and Vance (Dani) Ellison, and their son, Trevor, of Solon.


Richard Benson

Richard “Dick” D. Benson, 68, of Luzerne, died Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids. Services were held Dec. 9 at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids by the Rev. Dan Hoeger. Burial was at Linwood cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Local survivors include brother Larry (Judy) Benson of Solon.
Dick was born July 24, 1943, the son of Kenneth and Violet (Henecke) Benson in Cedar Rapids. On Sept. 22, 1962, he married Cynthia Turner in Marion. Dick worked for Universal Engineering for over 30 years.

The ongoing story in this space about finding a skeleton in the basement of my office would be a lot easier to develop if I was the victim instead of some mystery person.
At one time or another there were plenty of people in Solon that would have just as well seen me gone.
Roger, the postmaster, would have to be near the top of the list.


Food For Thought

If you’re a mystified male wondering what to give your lady for Christmas, this is probably not going to be much help. Not, that is, unless you’re not out to impress her with something expensive, or any of the other consumer goods everybody envisions when they think of wrapped goodies under the Christmas tree. Those high-end, traditional extravagances, while they no doubt signify some measure of devotion or regard, have little to do with what women really want, or with what the average mate is able to sensibly provide.
