Robert William Black, 61, of Solon, died at home Friday Jan. 13, 2012, from ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). Visitation will be held at Brosh Chapel in Solon on Jan. 18 from 4 until 7 p.m. A Celebration of Life service will be held at Cornell College King Chapel on Sunday, Jan. 22, with Bob’s favorite music being played beginning at 2 p.m. with the service to follow at 2:30 p.m. Chaplain Catherine Quehl-Engle will preside. A family inurnment will be held at a later date.


Walkin'

The pickles caught my eye because they were out of place among the flashlights, watch fobs and assorted small tools on the counter of the local hardware store. “Gourmet Rickles Pickles,” the label read, “crunch’em, munch’en, lunch’em.”
“Never heard of these before,” I said to no one in particular as I rolled a jar in my hand. The sales clerk overheard me and offered that they came from the nearby town of Coralville, and I bought a jar.
It was love at first bite.


Food For Thought

I can’t help wondering just what sexual orientation has to do with separation of church and state. I see no connection between gays serving openly in the military and children praying in school– can you? And why certain people are so positive that their own “family values” are everybody’s ideal. Every family has their own set of values, right down to how they want their chicken fried and how much mustard to put in the potato salad. And I have to laugh out loud when that person says he would, “Cut their pay in half and send them home early.” Without their vote on the matter? Really?


Early out Jan. 19

The early out activity for Thursday, Jan. 19, will be crafting thumbies and kazoos from 1 until 2 p.m. for all Solon students. Thumbies are little drawings made out of fingerprints. The kids will stamp their fingerprints on paper and then draw little designs like animals and faces out of the fingerprint. The kazoos will be made from cardboard paper rolls. No registration is required. Elementary age students participating need to be picked up by their parent or caregiver at 2 p.m.
The next movie will be on early out Thursday, Feb. 2, from 1 until 3 p.m.
