Women of Troy triumphant against Saints

IOWA CITY– Attendees of the Thursday, Jan. 26, girls’ junior varsity, sophomore and varsity triple-header were made aware of a killer known as pancreatic cancer.
They were also made aware of just why the Women of Troy were undefeated and are still ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 4A, as West took care of Cedar Rapids Xavier 52-37 in a match-up of MVC Valley Division leaders.
Pancreatic cancer took a person dear to the hearts of the Women of Troy, Ellyn Found, mother of Caroline Found. Caroline was killed in a moped accident in August, and Ellyn succumbed a month later.


CCA girls basketball suffers missed opportunities

TIFFIN– Turnovers and cold shooting in the second period doomed the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers at home Tuesday, Jan. 24, against the Williamsburg Raiders.
Tara Walls put the Clippers on the board with a three-bomb early in the first period, but a late run by the Raiders gave the guests a 14-11 lead.


Free dance classes begin Feb. 11

NORTH LIBERTY– Area teens ages 13-18 are invited to sign up now for a free, four-week session of dance classes taught by the University of Iowa Dancers In Company, held at the North Liberty Recreation Center on Saturday mornings from Feb. 11 to March 4.
The series of hour-long workshops will teach components of hip-hop, jazz and modern dance, as well as opportunities to learn combinations from the company’s repertoire. On week four, participants will travel as a group to the University of Iowa to see Dancers in Company perform at 1 p.m.


Scout troop 216 to host chili supper Feb. 4

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty Boy Scout Troop 216 will host its 32nd annual chili supper from 4:30 until 7 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 4, at the North Liberty Community Center.
Tickets are $5 with children age five and under admitted free. The dinner includes all-you-can-eat meat or vegetarian chili, bread, drinks and a variety of homemade desserts, including traditional scout cobbler.


Blood drive to be held Feb. 6

NORTH LIBERTY– The University of Iowa DeGowin Blood Center will hold a blood drive at the North Liberty Recreation Center on Monday, Feb. 6, from 4 until 7 p.m.
In an average week, UIHC patients need nearly 600 units of blood products. One pint of donated blood can help save the lives of several people.
To be eligible to donate blood a person must:
• Be 17 years old or 16 with parental consent;
• Weigh at least 110 pounds;
• Be cold or flu symptom free for five days;
• Pass a mini-physical and medical history inquiry;
• Have a photo ID;

TIFFIN— A week after the board of directors of the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school district received a forecast of continued enrollment growth in North Liberty‘s the North Bend Elementary School neighborhood, the board learned Tiffin is expanding too.
And in a few years, a new elementary school will likely be needed.


CCA board will likely green-light NBE expansion

TIFFIN— A six-classroom addition to the North Bend Elementary School in North Liberty will likely be approved next month. In the third work session this month, the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school board continued to look at a list of enrollment growth options, including proposed the addition.
Four of the seven members– Terry Davis, Mic Kahler, president Eileen Schmidt and Ted Hergert– said the addition was their top choice among seven options the board has been discussing. Steve Swenka and Bob Broghammer elected to pursue other options, while Aimee Pitlick said she had no favorite choice.


Who’s in the dog house?

IOWA CITY– Last Wednesday, representatives of the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center presented their case for proposing a regional animal shelter before board members of the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) of Johnson County.
MPO board members– specifically, those sitting on the Urban Policy Board– had plenty of questions for the panel of presenters. But those making the pitch only had one question in return.
