Habitat for Humanity offers energy efficiency retrofit

IOWA CITY– Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity will audit and retrofit up to 60 homes to improve energy efficiency in Cedar, Iowa, and Johnson counties over the next two years. The local non-profit agency will receive $74,000 in funding from the Department of Energy’s Weatherization Innovation Pilot Program and will seek matching contributions from community organizations, private foundations, individual donors and volunteers.


Emily Vanourny

Emily Vanourny, 98, of Fairfax, died Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012, at Heritage Nursing and Rehab Center in Cedar Rapids. Services were held Jan. 6 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids. Burial was in Blain Cemetery, Swisher.
Emily Raim was born June 14, 1913, in Swisher, the daughter of Lewis and Frances (Drahos) Raim. She was united in marriage to Allan Vanourny on July 10, 1940. Together they partnered in farming in the Walford area for many years, retiring to Fairfax in 1979.
Local survivors include a nephew, Kenneth (Marcella) Raim of North Liberty.


Myrtis Upah

Myrtis Ann Upah, 82, formerly of Cedar Rapids and Chelsea, died Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012, in her home from cancer. Services were held Jan. 7 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Chelsea by Deacon Joe Behounek. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Local survivors include Andrea (Larry) Shaevitz of Swisher.
Her greatest joy was spending time with family and friends. She was an avid quilter and accomplished needlework artist.

Theodore Rittenmeyer

Theodore “Ted” Rittenmeyer, 83, of 1095 Silvercrest Circle, Iowa City, died Monday, Jan. 2, 2012, at the Briarwood Health Care Center in Iowa City after a courageous battle with dementia.
Funeral services were held Jan. 6 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City, with burial following at St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City.
Ted was born on July 24, 1928, in Iowa City “Goosetown,” the son of Albert P. and Bess L. (Fitch) Rittenmeyer. He graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic School in 1947. Ted was joined in wedlock to Marjory M. Crock on December 22, 1948. She preceded him in death.
