Solon American Legion fundraiser breakfast Sunday, Oct. 21

SOLON– The Solon American Legion will hold a breakfast on Sunday, Oct. 21, at the legion hall from 7 a.m. until noon.
The costs is $7 for adults, $4 for children (6-12), and five and under are free for all-you-care-to-eat pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits and gravy, hash browns, juice, coffee and milk. All proceeds go to the legion’s new interior painting and renovations.


Belts tightening at Solon’s Old Gold Diner

SOLON– “It’s all dollars and cents, folks.”
Susan Wehr, executive director of Elder Services Inc. of Iowa City, was addressing a group gathered in the sanctuary of the Solon United Methodist Church.
Through the doors behind them in the fellowship hall, volunteers were preparing the day’s congregate meal, a federally-funded, locally organized nutrition and social program for seniors.


Big boost

SHUEYVILLE– A pair of underground storage tanks in this small Northwest Johnson County community should bring comfort to residents and firefighters alike.
The two tanks will hold 28,000 gallons of water for fire protection in a town without fire hydrants due to the lack of a municipal water system.


Sutliff Bridge spans Cedar River again

SUTLIFF– With cold ones in their hands and smiles on their faces, about 300 people gathered in Sutliff Friday afternoon to celebrate the return of history.
“This place matters and these people matter,” said Rod Sullivan, chair of the Johnson County Board of Supervisors.

The Hawkeye men’s basketball team had its first winning season in three years (18-17) and now is ready to take the next step.
What does that mean?
How about 20 wins, finishing in the top half of the Big Ten and making it to the Big Dance (the NCAA tournament)?
They have a chance, and with only one senior on the roster, the future looks bright.
Eric May (6-5, 217) is the last man standing. He came in with Cully Payne and Brandon Cougill, but they both are gone.


Hawk Talk

You tell me if this makes sense.
The Hawkeyes could come up with only 12 yards rushing on 13 carries in the first half.
Iowa also had only four first downs at half and Mark Weisman was held to only 20 on 11 carries which comes out to 1.8 yards per carry.
James Vandenberg completed 8-16 passes with one interception and the Hawks trailed 10-3 at intermission.
Then at the end of the game Mark, who finished with 116 yards and a score, can’t play in overtime because of a leg injury.
Oh yeah, how about the rainy conditions all day.
Thank goodness you play two halves (and then some).


Paul B. “Duke” Fisher

Paul B. ”Duke” Fisher, 73, of Solon, formerly of South Amana, died at his home Monday, Oct. 8, 2012, surrounded by his family.
In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Paul’s memory. Online condolences may be left for his family on the web at www.gayandciha.com.


Edward Fitzpatrick

Edward R. Fitzpatrick, 91, of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012, at Living Center East after a short illness. Services were held Oct. 13 at Cedar Memorial Park. Burial with military rites was in Mount Calvary Cemetery.
Local survivors include his son, Michael (Barbara) of Solon.
Ed was born Jan. 8, 1921, in Olin, the son of James and Rena (Tarbox) Fitzpatrick. He married Helen M. Schmidt on March 15, 1946, in Cedar Rapids. She died in 2006. Ed was owner and operator of E.F. Construction Co., retiring from there after many years of services.


Jack Erwin

Jack Erwin, 77, of Crawfordsville, died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2012, at the M.L. McCreedy Home in Washington following complications from ALS Disease. Celebration of life services were held Oct. 10 at the United Church of Crawfordsville with Pastor Jason Collier and Larry Fletcher officiating. Interment was at the Crawfordsville Cemetery.
Memorials have been established for the United Church of Crawfordsville, Hospice of Washington County or the Crawfordsville First Responders.
