ICCSD board tables high school money grab for possible bond vote

IOWA CITY– A presentation from new ICCSD financial chief Craig Hansel put the brakes on reallocation of SILO funds for a new high school.
A policy change for $32 million in SILO monies was on the Oct. 2 agenda, but the motion was tabled until the board’s facilities and financial committees could meet again to decide the fate of the facility money pile after Hansel’s slides showed untapped potential.

Guitar hero bridges into new NL business

NORTH LIBERTY- After playing for 25 years, Darwin Lindahl should know guitars. He knows their histories, construction and components. He knows the tone, dynamics and performance of guitars and effects pedals. He knows the knock-off guitars after which other guitars are modeled, like Gibson’s famous Les Paul and a Fender Stratocaster.
He also gets excited about any cool axe with what he calls “curb appeal.” Guitars made of ash wood or those with a mahogany body and a maple top, a few choice guitars on consignment, and guitars for guitarists with chops.

CCA test scores decline

OXFORD– Standardized test scores have dropped in the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school district, but officials say it isn’t cause for alarm.
Yet.
District Curriculum Director Mark Ernst gave the Annual Progress Report (APR) for the 2011-2012 school year during the school board of directors’ monthly meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 19. The complete report meets the requirements of the Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) report necessary under the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) act, and the APR required under the Iowa Code.

Shared space spares waste

IOWA CITY– Four nonprofit organizations came together last Thursday to celebrate a very welcomed gift.
In September, the Johnson County Board of Supervisors agreed to sell its former Public Health building for $1 to the Crisis Center of Johnson County. Space in the 7,300 square foot building will be used to supplement the Crisis Center’s current location next door, and the rest will be leased to the Domestic Violence Intervention Program (DVIP), the National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI) of Johnson County and Iowa City’s Free Lunch Program.

Solon cross country boys finish runner-up at IMS Invitational

TROY MILLS– After a nearly three-month season, Solon’s cross country team is heading toward finals. The WaMaC conference, districts and… hopefully… a trip to state lie ahead.
With a late season surge, the Spartans are starting to firm up the lineup. “They are starting to come on; to run as a team,” assessed coach Emy Williams. “They’re pushing each other. They are more consistent with their races.” Staying in-sync will be important in the next couple weeks.

North Linn
With a crowded, talented field, Solon’s boys locked-in sixth place at the Oct. 6 Lynx Invitational.
