Katie (Kathryn) Rose Birtcher

Katie (Kathryn) Rose Birtcher, 8, of Lone Tree, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012, at the University of Iowa Hospitals. Mass of the Resurrection for Katie was held on Oct. 30 at the legion. Burial was at the Lone Tree Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established. Online condolences for the family may be sent to www.lewisfuneralhomes.com.


Walkin'

We made Meyersdale by mid-afternoon and rolled 11 miles to our overnight in Rockwood, Pa. While the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) is gravel, it is excellently maintained and we set our sights on covering a hundred miles in two days.


Food For Thought

I’ve always admired the person who can keep the keeping in housekeeping. It implies that the trick to the whole thing is in maintaining the status quo; in staying on top of things and returning everything to its proper order immediately if not sooner. I once shared a dorm room with a neatnik. It gives me shivers just to contemplate repeating the experience.

Three Clippers advance to state cross country

CENTER JUNCTION– A trio of runners will represent Clear Creek Amana (CCA) in the Class 3A State Cross Country Meet, to be held Saturday, Oct. 27, at the Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge.Madelaine Hinsley was the fifth-fastest girl with a time of 16:40 while Ben Alcorn and Jack Murray placed ninth and tenth in boys’ competition to qualify. Alcorn’s time was 17:56 while Murray was one second behind him.
Both boys and girls squads finished eighth overall.


Cardinals close out Clippers’ season

MAQUOKETA– The time to put away the equipment has come.
The 2012 football season is over for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers. Coach Rodney Walls and company took a 4-4 record on the road Friday night to Maquoketa for week nine action and a chance at making the playoffs. However, the Cardinals, recovering from a loss to Solon the week before, held CCA to one touchdown and took the night, 14-7.

IOWA CITY– It was the last regular season volleyball match for the West High Women of Troy and time to honor and say thanks to three seniors. Ally Disterhoft and Emily Merdinger were recognized with manager Emily Carpenter between the sophomore and varsity matches Tuesday night at West. In a gesture of good will and class, the Women of Troy recognized Cedar Rapids Prairie’s seniors (Becca Bell, Brittney Lash, Brenna Nehring and Sara Stevenson) as well.


Sport Clips Haircuts launches campaign to help heroes call home

NORTH LIBERTY– Sport Clips Haircuts in Cedar Rapids, Coralville and North Liberty will join more than 950 of the franchise’s locations across the country in launching its annual “Help A Hero” fundraising campaign to support the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ (VFW) Operation Uplink™. Sport Clips’ goal is to raise $500,000 in its sixth year of donating to the program, which offers free call days to deployed and hospitalized U.S. service members. The campaign will continue through Veterans Day, Nov. 11, when $1 from every haircut service will go to Operation Uplink™.


Crisis Center hosts Suicide Survivors Support Group Nov. 1

IOWA CITY– A support group for those who have lost someone to suicide will meet Thursday, Nov. 1, from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at The Crisis Center of Johnson County, 1121 Gilbert Ct., Iowa City. The Suicide Survivors Support Group offers participants a safe place to talk about memories, ongoing grief and the stigma surrounding death by suicide. New members are welcome and encouraged to attend.

CCA sells fine fruit for the fine arts

TIFFIN– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) fine arts boosters group, F.A.M.E., is promoting its annual fruit, cheese, meat and nut sale going on from now until Nov. 6. Fruit will be delivered on Dec. 8. Benefit for Jim ‘Catfish’ Becicka of Oxford to be held Nov. 10

OXFORD– Jim “Catfish” Becicka has been battling cancer for the past 18 months.
A benefit will be held Saturday, Nov. 10, at St. Mary’s Auditorium in Oxford. The event will begin with a meal (free will offering), serving from 4:30 until 8:30 p.m., followed by a live auction at 7 p.m. Also included will be a raffle drawing for: two half-hog packages; a cedar chest; an eight-foot windmill; a night on the town package; and various gift cards and certificates.
