Vella Semler

Vella R. Semler, 75, of Iowa City, died peacefully at home Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012. Funeral services were held Nov. 5 at the Gay and Ciha Funeral Service in Iowa City. Burial was at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. Contributions in Vella’s name can be made to Iowa City Hospice. Benjamin Newell

Benjamin J. Newell, 24, of North Liberty, formerly of Mason City, died unexpectedly Oct. 31, 2012, at his residence. Funeral services were held Nov. 5 at First United Methodist Church with Pastor Sean McRoberts officiating. Donald Dean “Curly” Lenz

Donald Dean “Curly” Lenz, 82, of Solon, died Friday, Nov. 9, 2012. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, at St. Mary Catholic Church with Fr. Jim Vrba celebrating. Burial will follow in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, where full military rites will be conducted by the Solon American Legion. Visitation was Tuesday at Brosh Chapel in Solon, where there was a 7 p.m. vigil.


Marcia Holinsky

Marcia Holinsky, 83, Iowa City, died Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012, at University of Iowa Hospital and Clinic following a brief illness.
Graveside services were held Nov. 13 at Mt. Hebron Cemetery, Brooklyn, New York. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Iowa City Hospice. Arrangements are with Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, where condolences may be sent to www.lensingfuneral.com.


Patrick Goodall

Patrick Goodall, 62, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids. Services were held Nov. 5 at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids. Burial followed at Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Local survivors include daughter Jennifer Velky, son-in-law Tim Velky, and grandson, Clayton Velky, all of Solon.


Kathryn Daily

Kathrin “Kathy” F. Daily, 70, Belle Plaine, died Friday, Nov. 2, 2012, at her home following a lingering illness. Services were held Nov. 5 at Hrabak Funeral Home by Joseph T. Kane, Chaplain for Hospice of Mercy. Burial was in Rector Cemetery, Chelsea.
She is survived locally by sister Michelle VanThournout of Ely.
Memorials may be directed to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha or to the Belle Plaine Ambulance.
Her warm and generous heart and Beautiful smile will be greatly missed by all. She will forever remain alive in our memories.


Walkin'

Picking up from where I left off last week, Sabra and I started the final leg of our bicycle trip about 8:30 a.m. with two cold beers in my pannier.
The day was clear, warming quickly and I soon noticed that I had forgotten to fill my water bottles before leaving. I was nowhere near dying of thirst, but after 15 miles I was getting uncomfortable.
And then we came across Joe near Perryopolis.


Food For Thought

I have many friends who live in relatively new houses, houses with patios and decks and a front entrance that presents a barrier against the outside world rather than an inviting front porch. I remember the days when front porches had porch swings, Adirondack chairs, even hammocks slung between the house and railing. Porches where families sat after supper and watched the world go by, greeted neighbors out for strolls, kept an eye on the kiddies riding their tricycles along the sidewalk before being called in for bedtime.

Lady Spartans hammer their way into state tournament

SOLON– When that last point fell against them, tears streamed down the faces of the Lady Spartans’ volleyball team.
They hugged, then they wiped their eyes and stood with the runner-up trophy in the center of the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.
Solon, ranked No. 6 in Class 4A, had taken on the top three seeds in the tournament and had almost run the table, just running out of points to play against the No. 1 team, Charles City, in the 4A final Saturday in Cedar Rapids.


Gustin named Solon head coach

SOLON– Solon Community School District Activities Director Keith McSweeney announced Tuesday that Peter Gustin will have the "interim" tag removed from his title as the head volleyball coach at Solon High School.
"Coach Gustin did a fabulous job this year and we couldn't have been happier with his performance," McSweeney stated in an email. "We have been impressed with Peter since the first time he walked through our doors, and we are even more confident in his abilities after observing him this season."
