TIFFIN— At 8:30 a.m. on a Monday morning, a bell rings. Fourteen Clear Creek Amana (CCA) high school students filter in to a classroom for immersion in the government of the United States of America.
And they want to be there.


Swisher Legion to sponsor ‘Chili Cook-off’ Feb. 5

SWISHER– The Swisher American Legion will hold a “Chili Cook-off” on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 5. The entry fee is $5, which includes participants’ all-you-can-eat chili. Entries must arrive at the Swisher American Legion by 2 p.m. One entry per person; one crock-pot per entry.
Prizes are first place $100, second place $50, third place $25.
Everyone is welcome for the $5 all-you-can-eat chili after the judging.

Solon boys fall to conference leaders Mount Vernon and Western Dubuque

SOLON– They played hard, they were in the game, but they couldn’t quite finish.
It’s been a familiar theme for the Solon boys’ basketball team, which dropped home games to the conference’s top two teams last week.
The Spartans hosted Mount Vernon Tuesday in a 37-31 loss and suffered a similar fate Friday night when Western Dubuque of Epworth rolled into town, 59-52.


Lady Spartans break streak with win over Indee

SOLON– The Solon Lady Spartans snapped a four-game losing streak last week with a 66-55 home win against Independence.
Unfortunately, the home win was bookended by two road losses at Mount Vernon and Western Dubuque at Epworth.
Solon had its opportunities against Mount Vernon, the top team in the WaMaC East. The game was knotted at 21-all at the half and the Lady Spartans held a four-point lead going into the final quarter.
“I thought we put together one of our best games of the year,” Head Coach Mark Sovers said of the 49-44 loss in Mount Vernon Jan. 24.


Wrestlers take second at WaMaC meet

DEWITT– The Solon wrestling team grappled to its highest finish since joining the WaMaC with a runner-up finish at the conference tournament Saturday. Team scores were as follows:

Solon Large Group Speech to district competition

Solon Large Group Speech went to Monticello for district contest on Saturday, Jan. 21. Kaitlin Schlotfelt and Sammy Eckrich performed a piece that you may have seen last spring at our play festival by a local playwright, Brian Tanner. “21st Century Espionage” is a comedic depiction of introducing social media to the old-fashioned spy game. Their performance of this piece received a Division I rating, qualifying the pair of seniors to perform it again for three judges at the state contest. We will be traveling to Cedar Rapids Washington High School on Feb. 4 for the state contest.


Foreign exchange students

Solon students (grades seven to 12) and families have the opportunity once again to host a student from Japan. The students will be in Solon for three weeks. The dates are Feb. 25 until March 18. If you are interested please pick up an application in the middle or high school offices. Applications were due back to the school office by Jan. 31.


Juniors, seniors and parents needed for Bringin’ in the Green

Attention juniors and seniors. The Solon Dollars for Scholars “Bringin’ in the Green” Carnival will be held on Sunday, March 4, at the Lakeview gym. Juniors, seniors and their parents are needed to help make the carnival a success this again this year. All the money raised will be used for scholarships for the Solon graduating class of 2012. Sign-up sheets are in the high school office or contact Pat Zimmerman at 319-430-2105 for more information.


Kindergarten Round-up information

Kindergarten Round-Up is a long way off, April 13, but we need to collect information about children who are in the Solon Community School District who will be attending kindergarten in the Fall of 2012. Children must turn five by Sept. 15 to be eligible to enroll in kindergarten.
If you have a child who will attend kindergarten next fall, please go to the website at www.solon.k12.ia.us. Click on the Lakeview link at the top of the district home page. Click on the information tab. Click on Kindergarten Round-Up.


Preschool openings

The Lakeview Preschool will soon be accepting applications for 2012-2013 openings. If you are interested in receiving an application packet, please call the Lakeview office at 319-624-3401, ext. 1290, or email Heather Groh hgroh@solon.k12.ia.us and request that you be added to the list. We will ask for your name, home address, email address, telephone number, your child’s name and his/her date of birth. Please have this information to the Lakeview office by Friday, Feb. 17.
