Walkin'

To get back to my story about finding a skeleton in the basement of my office, I need to flesh out the list of suspects as if the victim had been me instead of some yet to be revealed personage.
As detailed earlier, Solon was and is a great town filled with wonderful people, but it is a small town nevertheless. As the owner and operator of the newspaper for some 20 years, it was inevitable that I angered at least a few people along the way, and more than once I saw murder in their eyes.
One such citizen was Dick the insurance agent.

Food For Thought

It was the late 1950s when we moved into a big, turn of the century house in the Goosetown section of Iowa City. My neighbor’s house next door had been built at the same time as ours and was almost a twin to it. We even shared a garage that straddled the property line. It had been built as a carriage house and had doors at both ends, so that one could drive the horses and carriage straight into it, unhitch the horses and lead them out the other door. The two halves of the garage were separated by a masonry wall.

Advantage: kids

SOLON– One local non-profit organization has been serving up some options for children and teens during this year’s winter break.
Sportability of Iowa held a tennis camp in Solon Dec. 27-29, but not just to help kids better their backhands, strengthen their strokes and ace their serves.
Skills learned in Sportability activities go beyond the courts, fields and tracks, to help people of all ages enhance their lives.

Public and private land trusts gaining ground

JOHNSON COUNTY– Despite rising land costs and a down economy, figures released in November 2011 show that now more than ever, people are making financial and individual commitments to preserve the nation’s natural areas for recreational use and habitat protection and to safeguard water supplies.
Data in the 2010 National Land Trust Census Report show that the total acres of land conserved by local, state and national land trusts grew by about 23 million acres in the last 10 years. Iowa showed a 22 percent increase in protected land since 2005.

A simple place to shoot the breeze

SWISHER— He did it, but he’s not really sure why.
Rob Pudil and his wife Gena recently purchased Melsha’s Tap from Loraine Melsha and renamed it Shooters on Second.
“I honestly don’t know why we did it,” Rob said. As the owner of Affordable Soft Water, he’s no stranger to running a business. He also worked in a bar back in the 1980s. “The opportunity came up (to buy the bar) but there was no rhyme or reason to it.” Rob said he shot Melsha an offer, and a month later Melsha asked Gena if he was serious.

Lucky 13s as Women of Troy reign over City

By Chris Umscheid
North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY — The West High Women of Troy improved to 13-0, on Friday the 13th.
If B.J. Mayer’s crew was superstitious, they didn’t show it as they faced cross-town rival City High at home in front of a capacity crowd.
West edged ahead to a 17-14 lead after the first period. Ally Disterhoft put up ten of those points including a three-pointer and a free throw which had to spin around the rim several times before dropping through the net.
