Solon Boy Scout soup supper Jan. 14

SOLON– The Solon Boy Scout Troop 120 is hosting its annual soup supper on Saturday, Jan. 14, at St. Mary Catholic Church from 5-7 p.m. This is an all-you-can-eat meal that includes piping hot soup, fresh baked bread and a wide assortment of desserts to choose from. Cost is $6 for ages 10 and up, $4 for ages 5 to 9, free for those under 5 years of age. The Scouts and their families spend the day cooking and baking all their favorites for the meal, so please come and enjoy.


Discarded Christmas trees picked up Jan. 13

The City of Solon will be picking up Christmas trees Friday, Jan. 13.  Please place trees at the curb by 7 a.m. that day. 


Vets memorial breakfast

The Solon American Legion will host a Veterans Memorial Breakfast Sunday, Jan. 22, from 7:30 a.m. until 12 p.m. The menu includes pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits and gravy, hash brown, juice coffee or milk. The cost is $7 for adults and $4 for children age six through 12. Kids age five and under eat free. Proceeds go to the Solon Veterans’ Memorial maintenance and landscaping fund.

CORALVILLE– Peter Fisher of the Iowa Policy Project was surprised by the number of local residents willing to sit through two hours of discussion on something as mundane as property taxes.
“I thought there would be a few really wonky types like me,” Fisher told the standing-room-only audience that gathered at the Coralville Public Library Jan. 4 to hear a presentation and panel discussion on Tax Increment Financing (TIF).


Newcomer to fill seat

SOLON– Jessie Ehlinger honestly did not expect to be appointed.
Ehlinger, 27, was selected last week to fill the Solon City Council vacancy created by the election of Cami Rasmussen as mayor.
“I knew I wanted to become more involved with the functionality and logistics of the city,” Ehlinger noted in an email Friday. “So I applied to be on the library board. When Cami was elected mayor and her seat became available, I decided to show my interest in this position on city council.”

Martha F. Phillips

Martha F. Phillips, 95 of Spring Lake, Mich., formerly of Ely and Solon, passed away Dec. 31, 2011. Funeral Services were held on Jan. 7 at St. John Lutheran Church in Ely. Burial was at Cedar Memorial Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.


Craig Newkirk

Craig Theo Newkirk, 56, Homestead, died Friday, Dec. 30, 2011, at his home. A Celebration of Life was held Jan. 2 at St. John’s Lutheran Church near Homestead. Burial was in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery.
Craig was born May 19, 1955, in Williamsburg, Iowa, the son of Vergil and Donna (Ahlberg) Newkirk. He attended St. John’s Lutheran School near Homestead and graduated from Williamsburg High School. Craig was united in marriage to Sandra Brack on June 18, 1977, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oxford.


Virgil Miller

Virgil Lynn Miller, 71, was born July 10, 1940, in rural Kalona, the son of Emery B. and Mary Edna (Shetler) Miller. He died on Sunday, Jan. 1, 2012. On June 27, 1964, he was united in marriage to Lulu Jane Brenneman, daughter of Ephriam and Anna Faye (Christner) Brenneman, at the Fairview Mennonite Church in rural Kalona.
Local survivors include Dr. Scott D. Miller (Karen) of North Liberty.
Virgil grew up Amish and became a teacher and a rural letter carrier. He was a member of the Living Word Fellowship in Kalona.


H. Johnette Miller

An amazing, strong, and loving woman is what everyone experienced when they met Jonnye.
Born in Minneapolis, Minn. on Jan. 6, 1926, H. Johnette Miller (Jonnye) died of pneumonia on Jan. 1, 2012.
