Blood drive to be held Feb. 6

IOWA CITY– The University of Iowa DeGowin Blood Center will hold a blood drive at the North Liberty Recreation Center on Monday, Feb. 6, from 4 until 7 p.m.
In an average week, UIHC patients need nearly 600 units of blood products. One pint of donated blood can help save the lives of several people.
To be eligible to donate blood a person must:
• Be 17 years old or 16 with parental consent;
• Weigh at least 110 pounds;
• Be cold or flu symptom free for five days;
• Pass a mini-physical and medical history inquiry;
• Have a photo ID;
• Know Social Security or drivers license number;


Scout troop 216 to host chili supper Feb. 4

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty Boy Scout Troop 216 will host its 32nd annual chili supper from 4:30 until 7 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 4, at the North Liberty Community Center.
Tickets are $5 with children age five and under admitted free. The dinner includes all-you-can-eat meat or vegetarian chili, bread, drinks and a variety of homemade desserts, including traditional scout cobbler.


Swisher Legion to sponsor chili cook-off Feb. 5

SWISHER– The Swisher American Legion will hold a “Chili Cook-off” on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 5. A $5 entry fee includes participants’ all-you-can-eat chili. Entries must arrive at the Swisher American Legion by 2 p.m. (no exceptions). One entry per person; one crock-pot per entry.
Prizes are first place $100, second place $50, third place $25. Everyone is welcome for the $5 all-you-can-eat chili after the judging. Call Ron for more information at 319-857-4315.


Mind-Body course at NL’s MercyCare

NORTH LIBERTY– Feel better with mind and body skills. Mercy Medical Center is offering a course focused on the connection between your physical health and the state of your mind and spirit. Simply by learning some easy skills you can gain more control over stress, pain and fatigue– and just feel better overall.
The course is facilitated by Helen Kudos, social work clinician at Mercy Family Counseling, who has advanced training in mind-body medicine.


Sons of the Oxford American Legion sponsor spaghetti dinner Jan. 28

OXFORD– The Oxford Sons of the American Legion– Squadron 537 will sponsor an all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner on Saturday, Jan. 28, from 3 until 7 p.m. at the Oxford American Legion, 128 East Main St., Oxford. The cost is $7 adults and $5 kids 12 and under.
Proceeds benefit English River Outfitters and the Oxford American Legion.

Tech report

IOWA CITY– The Iowa City Community School District’s (ICCSD) information services department got back their report card, called an information technology simplification assessment (ITSA), from Dell, the computer company based in Texas.
Blake Chism, a simplification practice executive for Dell, presented the report, which cost the district $41,000. Physical Plant and Equipment levy (PPEL) funds paid for the cost of the district’s study.
Chism is the former Director of Information Services at the Orange Unified School District in California, the job now held by David Dude for ICCSD.

NORTH LIBERTY— For the second time this month, the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) School Board met to discuss options for handling continued enrollment growth. The board met in its regular monthly work session on Wednesday, Jan. 18, at North Bend Elementary.

Proposed budget good news for fans of status quo

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty City Council got a sneak peek at next year’s budget numbers last week, and the good news is things are holding steady.
Most significantly for North Liberty taxpayers, if the proposed budget does meet with council approval, the city’s property tax rate is expected to remain unchanged, at $11.03 per $1,000 of assessed value before the state’s rollback formula is applied.
