Tiffin faces towering prospect

TIFFIN— As Tiffin continues to expand, the Johnson County community is facing growing demands on its infrastructure.
One such shortcoming is in the municipal water supply. Former Mayor Royce Phillips felt a new tower was an important project, and new Mayor Steve Berner concurs.


North Liberty joins area delegation in Washington, D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C.– North Liberty officials are meeting with legislators in Washington, D.C. this week to lobby for federal funding.
North Liberty City Administrator Ryan Heiar and Mayor Tom Salm were among the delegation of elected officials and city representatives to meet with federal legislators and their staff as part of the Iowa City Area Chamber’s annual lobbying trip to Washington, D.C.


New ball diamond not hitting home yet

NORTH LIBERTY– As North Liberty officials firmed up spending decisions for the upcoming fiscal year, the city’s Capital Improvements Plan (CIP) was the focus of discussion at a budget work session Tuesday, Jan. 31.
City Administrator Ryan Heiar asked for direction from the council on most CIP projects listed for FY13, including the purchase of a generator for the North Liberty Community Center, planned street improvement projects and whether or not to participate in a proposed regional animal shelter facility.


Senior Advocates trip to three Ws

SOLON– Monday, Nov. 21, was a beautiful fall day for the Senior Advocates’ trip to the three Ws. Arriving in West Liberty at El Patio restaurant, the group dined on delicious Mexican food, proceeding then to the Eulenspeigel Puppet Theater. The Snow Queen’s puppet show was performed by Monica Leo much to the delight of the many youngsters gathered as well as the oldsters. Monica creates the puppets, the scenery and all the necessary embellishments and has been doing so for over 30 years.


Spartans can’t pull out wins

SOLON– It was a tough loss.
With the score knotted 30-30 at halftime and 46-all going into the fourth quarter, the Solon boys’ basketball team had a chance against Dyersville Beckman last week.
The Spartans came away on the losing end of a 66-64 final at Dyersville Tuesday, and were unable to find the groove in an eight-point loss at home Friday against Maquoketa.
Turner Wentzien scored 25 points and was 7-7 from the line for Solon at Dyersville. Joe Weeks added 18 points. Jake Morris led the team with eight rebounds. Ryan Kunkel added seven.


Girls win two in a row

SOLON– Rylee Smith and Ashley Holubar led the Lady Spartans on girls’ basketball senior night. Smith scored 10 points in the first half and Holubar provided points in the paint in the second half to keep senior night Jan. 31 a happy last home game.
Solon defeated Dyersville Beckman, 46-45, after building a double-digit lead and then hanging on in the fourth quarter.
The one-point difference was a reverse of a one point loss against Dyersville Beckman on Jan. 3 when Solon fell, 27-28, to their WaMaC East Division rivals.


Solon wrestlers crown seven champions at sectional meet

MONTICELLO– The Solon varsity wrestling team crowned seven champions en route to a second place finish at the sectional tournament held Saturday in Monticello.
Team scores were as follows:
Wilton 234
Solon 217
Mount Vernon 210
CPU 128
Monticello 110.5
Anamosa 94.5
Individual champions for Solon included Cody Fritz (152 pounds), Aaron Shulista (160 pounds), J.J. Hanus (170 pounds), Lance Evans (182 pounds), Kyle Kroymann (195 pounds), Jay Pike (220 pounds), and Tommy Hamiel (Heavyweight).


Preschool openings

The Lakeview Preschool will soon be accepting applications for 2012-2013 openings. If you are interested in receiving an application packet, please call the Lakeview office at 319-624-3401, ext 1290, or email Heather Groh hgroh@solon.k12.ia.us and request to be added to the list. We will ask for your name, home address, email address, telephone number, your child’s name and his/her date of birth. Please have this information to the Lakeview office by Friday, Feb. 17. The following week, several forms will be sent, which then will need to be returned to the school by March 2 at 4 p.m. 


Solon dance show

Solon High School Dance Team presents “Spectacular 2012.” Join us Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. for an evening celebrating this year’s successful season. Four glow-in-the-dark dances, five visiting dance teams/studio groups and lots of fun. Admission is $5 adults, $4 students. Family and activity passes will be honored. Bring a non-perishable food item and receive a glow stick. One glow stick per person please. Hope to see you there.


Coupons

Keep them coming. The dance team sent $642 in coupons to a Navy base in Japan. We will continue to send coupons through spring break. Our current total is over $2,418. Thank you to those who have helped us help our troops overseas.
