Board of Supervisors agree on funding of new justice center

IOWA CITY– The Johnson County Board of Supervisors reached an unofficial agreement last Wednesday, March 7, to put a $46.8 million bond issue on the ballot in November to fund the construction of a new Johnson County justice center/jail.
The move– and a markedly civil tone– came in stark contrast to a series of contentious meetings in the days and week prior.

Long-awaited NL McDonald’s opens

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty, your order is served.
The long-anticipated McDonald’s restaurant at the corner of Penn Street and Highway 965 is hosting a Grand Opening this Thursday, March 15. Ronald McDonald himself will be there to greet customers from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., and the first customers through the door could receive extra McGoodies. Also, the store will be running daily food specials through Tuesday, March 20.

120th St. bids come in under original estimate

SHUEYVILLE– Bids for the reconstruction of 120th St. through this northwest Johnson County community came in under estimates last week. The Johnson County Board of Supervisors received and opened bids for the projected $2.2 million construction effort on Tuesday, March 6.
Metro Pavers submitted a bid of $1,852,952.14 for the lowest bid.
Shueyville Mayor Bryan Bredman said his city council reviewed the bids Wednesday night, March 7, and voted to recommend the board of supervisors accept Metro Paving’s bid. The supervisors did so on Friday morning, March 9, with a 5-0 vote to accept.

Misel first, Lady Spartans open track season at Demon Indoor

IOWA CITY– Solon’s Cara Misel needed every inch of her career-best shot put win at the Washington Demon Indoor invitational March 6 in Iowa City. Misel’s 40-1 1/2 toss locked up first place for her in the season opener at the University of Iowa track. Second was 39-10 from Amanda Houston of Fort Madison.  There were 25 schools at the meet.

Fall registration open at All Aboard and Play and Learn

SOLON– All Aboard and Play and Learn preschools are taking registrations for Fall 2012. The two centers are working with the school and offer the same type of preschool program available at the school. They also follow the school’s calendar year. One of the goals of the state wide program is to ensure that all four year olds enter kindergarten with the best possible skills needed to achieve academic success. SIAC sponsored forum on standard based grading

The Solon Community School District 2011-2012 study states, “SCSD stakeholders will analyze and study aspects of standards-based grading and reporting at all grade levels.” Teachers, students and administrators presented their experiences implementing and learning through standards-based grading at the Dec. 8 School Improvement Advisory Committee (SIAC) meeting. A similar presentation was given at the Feb. 6 board of education work session. Parents and community members are invited to a SIAC-sponsored forum on standards-based grading, Tuesday, April 3, at 6:30 p.m.

National Honor Society induction March 26

Plan to attend this year’s National Honor Society Induction Ceremony on Monday, March 26, at 7 p.m. in the middle school auditorium. The public is invited to attend and congratulate this year’s inductees.

High school art club empty bowls luncheon

Solon High School art club students kindly request your presence at the Third Annual Solon High School Empty Bowls Luncheon to End Hunger on Saturday, March 31, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the high school commons. Guests will be served a modest lunch of soup and bread in a ceramic bowl handmade by a local student, educator, or community member for a suggested minimum donation of $10. Guests are encouraged to keep the bowl at the end of their meal, with their compliments and sincere gratitude. All money collected will be donated to the Johnson County Crisis Center and Food Bank.

Middle school show choir

The Solon Middle School show choir program recently finished another successful competition season. Last weekend, Solon traveled to Cedar Rapids Xavier and competed against 16 middle schools from around Eastern Iowa. Synergy took first place in class 3A, and advanced to the evening finals for the second year in a row, placing fifth overall. Affinity took second place in the prep division, and won the “People’s Choice Award,” the first time a group Solon has won that award.
