LaMarr Scofield

LaMarr Earl Scofield, 91, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2012. Services were held March 5 at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel. Burial was at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. The Rev. William B. Harnish officiated.
Local survivors include his son Dennis (Roxanne) Scofield of Shueyville. He was preceded in death by his wife, Berniece Scofield; a daughter, Janet Scofield; and a brother, Laverne Scofield.


Jean Schuttloffel

Jean McGinty Schuttloffel, 68, of Marion, died Tuesday, March 6, 2012, at St. Luke’s Hospital following a courageous two-year battle with cancer. Funeral Mass was held March 10 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion. Inurnment was at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Local survivors include her daughter Susan (Adam) Hawkins of North Liberty.


Paul Dykstra

Paul D. Dykstra, 62, of Tipton, died March 2 of pancreatic cancer peacefully surrounded by family at home.
At his request his body will be cremated with interment at a later date. There was a celebration of life March 10 at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City.
Paul was born on Oct. 21, 1949, in Orange City, to Dick and Grace (Lems) Dykstra. In 1982 Paul moved to Iowa City and started Iowa City Landscaping with his brother Dennis Dykstra, and sister-in-law, Linda Dykstra. Paul served as the president of Iowa City Landscaping for the last 30 years.


James Cavin

James Gilbert “Jim” Cavin, 53, of Washington, died Sunday, March 4, 2012, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn., following a lengthy illness. Mass of the Resurrection was held March 8 at St. James Catholic Church in Washington, with Father Troy Richmond officiating.
Local survivors include stepbrother Michael Karen) Hendrickson of North Liberty.


Richard Ball

Richard Ball, 73, of Tiffin, died Saturday, March 3, 2012, at Country View Manor in North Liberty. Mass of Christian Burial was held March 7 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Coralville. The Rev. Walter Helms officiated. Burial will be private in St. Peter’s Cemetery in Cosgrove, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to The Tiffin Fire Department/First Responders or Country View Manor in North Liberty.


Food For Thought

I don’t seem to fit the sociological assumption that women are society’s nurturers (at least not of late). I’ve spent nearly all of my adult life nurturing. I’m tired of nurturing. My nurturing batteries have run down and can’t be recharged. Nurturing is a cozy and high-sounding word but I wonder how many people understand what it entails.

At last Wednesday’s Solon City Council meeting, council member Ron Herdliska asked if the burning of yard waste had been a problem.
“Yes,” answered fellow member Brad Kunkel.
“No,” responded residents Sue Ballantyne and Karen Jensen from the audience.
And that just about covers it.
Kunkel has been pushing to ban the burning of yard and garden waste, hoping instead to expand the city’s curbside leaf collection to include tomato vines and dead annuals.
