High school art club empty bowls luncheon

Solon High School art club students kindly request your presence at the Third Annual Solon High School Empty Bowls Luncheon to End Hunger on Saturday, March 31, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the high school commons. Guests will be served a modest lunch of soup and bread in a ceramic bowl handmade by a local student, educator, or community member for a suggested minimum donation of $10. Guests are encouraged to keep the bowl at the end of their meal, with their compliments and sincere gratitude. All money collected will be donated to the Johnson County Crisis Center and Food Bank.


Middle school show choir

The Solon Middle School show choir program recently finished another successful competition season. Last weekend, Solon traveled to Cedar Rapids Xavier and competed against 16 middle schools from around Eastern Iowa. Synergy took first place in class 3A, and advanced to the evening finals for the second year in a row, placing fifth overall. Affinity took second place in the prep division, and won the “People’s Choice Award,” the first time a group Solon has won that award.

Friends March meeting

The Friends of the Solon Library held their monthly meeting on March 1 in the library meeting room. Plans for the remainder of the calendar year were discussed. Funding for the summer reading program was discussed and money reserved for performers, movies, prizes and refreshments. Friends will pay for the repair of two damaged upholstered chairs. The children’s area needs new straight chairs for the reading tables and the much used kitchen set could also be replaced. Pricing for these items was also discussed. Santa was reserved for a Saturday in December to correspond with the holiday sale.


DVD donations welcome

Regular readers will know that new DVD acquisitions are listed weekly in the newspaper. DVDs are some of the most popular checkouts at the library and new additions frequently have a waiting list. The library DVD budget is supplemented by Friends of the Library to make possible the number of new DVDs we purchase.


Book donations needed

Friends of the Solon Library are preparing for the annual three-day Memorial Day weekend book sale that will be here in just a little over two months. Donations of gently used books, CDs and DVDs are accepted year round for the annual book sales and used book cart. Donations may be brought to the circulation desk during normal library hours.

Storytime for Tuesday, March 20, will be guest storyteller, Erika Binegar. All preschoolers from age two through five should come at 10:30 a.m. and welcome Erika to Solon library’s Storytime. On Tuesday, March 20, the Solon Area Book Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. to discuss Garth Stein’s “The Art of Racing in the Rain.” All interested adult readers are welcome to attend. Babygarten meets from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. on Wednesdays with programming for children from newborn through 24 months.


It’s spring break week

Normal library activities are taking place during the school’s spring break week from March 12 until 16. Regular library hours, Monday thru Thursday, noon until 8 p.m.; Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., and closed Sunday are in effect. There will be no YourSpace teen meets during spring break week. For third graders, the books needed to complete reading activities for the March reading bingo sheets are on display in the children’s area. There are also a few St Patrick’s Day books and some Easter stories available for checkout on display in the children’s section.


Adult computer classes

The next session of beginning adult computer classes is scheduled to start on Monday, May 21. Classes are held on Monday and Wednesday afternoons at 1 p.m. for six weeks. Call the library at 319-624-268 to register. The session that began on Monday, March 12, is filled.


Solon Old Gold Diner March events

SOLON– Hills Bank is sponsoring a meal at Old Gold Dining for the Senior Advocates on March 14. Brenda Langenberg from Mount Vernon will bring diners up to date on what Hills Bank & Trust can do for attendees. Call ahead to reserve seating at 319-624-2251.
