Spotlight spaghetti dinner March 29

SOLON– Mark your calendars for Thursday, March 29, for the annual Solon Spotlight spaghetti dinner. The event will be held in the high school commons immediately before the Solon Musical Showcase concert. Spaghetti, salad, bread, drink and dessert will be available for $8 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under. Serving times are 4:45 until 7 p.m. Diners will enjoy pre-concert entertainment by the high school jazz bands, jazz choirs and the middle school show choir. Starting at 7:30 p.m.


State auditor releases report on city’s 2010-11 finances

DES MOINES– State auditor David A. Vaudt released an audit report on the City of Solon.
The City’s receipts totaled $4,600,911 for the year ended June 30, 2011. The receipts included $621,928 in property tax, $461,225 from tax increment financing, $983,547 from charges for service, $383,553 from operating grants, contributions and restricted interest, $142,847 from local option sales tax, $19,903 from unrestricted interest on investments, $1,958,359 from bond proceeds and $29,549 from other general receipts.


Easter Egg Hunt

The Optimist Club of Solon will host its annual Easter Egg Hunt Sunday, April 1, beginning at 1:30 p.m. at the west end of the Solon Recreation and Nature Area (SRNA). The event is for children of all ages.

The Solon United Methodist Church is holding a “Living Last Supper” performance on Sunday, April 1, at the Solon Middle School auditorium. Music begins at 6:30 p.m. and the performance starts at 7 p.m. There will be no admission fee, however a free will donation will be taken. Proceeds will go to the Solon Habitat for Humanity Project. You may also bring canned food donations that will go to the Solon Food Pantry. Thank you in advance for your contributions and support.


Spartan youth football registration April 2

SOLON– Spartan youth tackle football registration is scheduled from 6 until 7 p.m. on Monday, April 2, at the Solon Middle School cafeteria. There will be a brief parent meeting and question and answer session, followed by registration. Students entering fifth and sixth grades in the fall are eligible. Legion riders host Palm Sunday breakfast

SOLON– The Solon American Legion Riders will be hosting their annual Palm Sunday breakfast on April 1. The all-you-can-eat menu consists of eggs cooked to order, pancakes, hash browns, bacon, sausage links, biscuits and gravy, orange juice, coffee and milk. Adults $7; kids 5-12 $4; under 5 free.


Spartan trapshooting team can drive March 31

NORTH LIBERTY– The Spartan trapshooting team will hold a can drive at the North Liberty American Legion Club 76 on Saturday, March 31, from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the 2012 spring competition.

Judge allows Coralville to proceed with Von Maur project

IOWA CITY– A district court judge has ruled that Coralville may proceed with a multi-million dollar economic development deal, at least for now.
Plaintiffs in a March 1 petition had asked the court for a temporary injunction to halt the City of Coralville’s proposed land sale to Von Maur department store. The deal would give Von Maur an estimated $14 million in incentives to relocate from Sycamore Mall to Coralville’s Iowa River Landing (IRL) area, paid for through Tax Increment Financing (TIF).


Burning to be resticted, not banned

SOLON– An ordinance revision to seasonally restrict the burning of landscape waste will come before the Solon City Council at an April 4 meeting.
Council members last week endorsed a proposal limiting burning to three days a week between April 1 through May 25 and Oct. 1 through Nov. 25. If adopted by the council, residents would be allowed to burn plant material generated on their property on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. during those periods.
And that may be as far as it goes, at least for a while.


Old Creamery visits Lakeview

SOLON– Crayons that talk, monkeys working in a smoothie shop, and bottles of soda that can’t get along with cans from another pop machine.
Whirl them all together and you’ve got “The Very Best Me,” an original musical comedy with a message performed by the Old Creamery Theatre for Young Audiences’ touring cast.
Students at Lakeview Elementary were again treated to one of the troupe’s 2012 performances last week.
