Brett Jeffrey Smith, 19 of Solon, died Monday, April 16, 2012, at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. Celebration of Life Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2012, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Solon. Visitation will be from 2 until 7 p.m. Monday at St. Mary Catholic Church. Brosh Chapel in Solon is handling arrangements.


Free health care checks June 2

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty residents who need basic health care checks but face difficulty covering the costs may take advantage of several health care professionals who will conduct those checks for free on June 2.

Brett Smith, 19, of Solon, died Monday, April 16, 2012, at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. Rosemary Tumey

Rosemary Louise Tumey, 90, of Ryan, died at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, on Sunday, April 8, 2012. She was born on July 19, 1921, in Alcomdale, Alberta, Canada, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Ann (McGirl) Morin.
Mass of the Resurrection was held April 12 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Ryan. The celebrant was the Rev. John Flaherty. Interment was at Calvary Cemetery, Ryan.
Rosemary was united in marriage to Leslie F. Tumey on Feb. 18, 1947, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Ryan. Five children were blessed to this marriage. Together they farmed near Ryan.


Barbara Sternad

Barbara Kay Meade Sternad, 76, died peacefully Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at her home in Iowa City.
Funeral Mass was celebrated April 14 at St. Peter’s in Cosgrove, with the Rev. Edmond Dunn officiating. Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Meals on Wheels or Iowa City Hospice.
Barbara was born Sept. 18, 1935, in Iowa City to Cletus James and Esther (Stanton) Meade. She graduated from Cosgrove High School in 1953. Barb married Donald William Sternad on Dec. 13, 1954, in Fairfax. Donald died in 1983.


Don Sheldon

Don L. Sheldon, 83, of Oakland, Calif., died Tuesday, April 10, 2012, at Piedmont Gardens in Oakland. Mr. Sheldon was born on May 3, 1928, in Indianapolis, Ind., the son of Raymond H. and Nellie H. (Pease) Stunkel. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church at Oakland. He was a Korean War veteran having served with the U.S. Army. He married Wilma Layton in Westport, Indiana on Jan. 28, 1951.
Local survivors include Nikolai Stalkfleet and Jonathan (Allison) Stalkfleet, all of North Liberty.


Soccer referees needed for youth soccer league

SOLON– The Solon Parks and Recreation Department is looking for referees to officiate spring soccer games. Games are played on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at the Solon Recreation and Nature Area. Knowledge of soccer rules and previous officiating experience is preferred but not required. If interested please contact Travis Young at travis.young@solon-iowa.com
