Early out April 19

The early out activity for Thursday, April 19, will be crafting wooden bracelets from 1 until 2 p.m. for all Solon students. No registration is required. Elementary age students participating need to be picked up by their parent or caregiver at 2 p.m.
The next movie will be on early out Thursday, May 3, from 1 until 3 p.m.


Solon Book Club

Solon Book Club will meet April 17 to discuss “Abide with Me” by Elizabeth Strout. All interested adult readers are welcome to attend. Storytime guest Tuesday

On Tuesday, April 17, our monthly Storytime guest will be Dana Robinson from Sweet Feet Yoga in Coralville. Instead of reading stories, she will be teaching some yoga poses. Storytime is for ages two through five, but siblings are always welcome. It meets at 10:30 a.m. and lasts about 45 minutes, ending with a craft.

A month to celebrate

April is National Poetry Month, a month-long celebration designed to increase the visibility of poetry and poets in our culture. Be sure to express yourself through poetry this month– whether you pen a limerick or a four-line rhyme, or absorb yourself in someone else’s writings. The library has many poetry books to enjoy– whether it’s from the children’s section, or everybody’s favorite from non-fiction, “The Best Loved Poems of the American People,” or a collection of Elizabeth Barrett Browning sonnets. Check out a poetry book this month.


Solon school district audit released for 2010-11

SOLON– The Solon Community School District’s revenues totaled $16,095,906 for the year ended June 30, 2011, an eight percent increase over the prior year. Revenues included $7,108,861 in local tax, charges for services and sales of $2,193,362, operating grants of $1,945,702, unrestricted state grants of $4,546,169, contributions and donations of $123,061, unrestricted interest of $129,775, other general revenues of $64,229 and loss on disposal of capital assets of $16,253.


Legislative listening post April 14 at Solon library

SOLON– The Solon Area Democrats will host a legislative listening post on Saturday, April 14, from 8 until 9 a.m. at the Solon Public Library main meeting room.
Scheduled to attend are Senator Bob Dvorsky and Representative Nate Willems, who currently represent the area in the state legislature. Also scheduled to attend are State Representative Mary Mascher, Johnson County Board of Supervisors Sally Stutsman and Janelle Rettig, and Solon Mayor Cami Rasmussen. Other elected officials have been invited.


Brewin’ up a batch of Hawkeye Gold

SOLON– Finding the right coffee to put in the bag– that’s been the challenge for Jeff Kral and Larry Erenberger in creating their own brand of bean drip for college sports fans.
Kral and Erenberger, who graduated from Solon just a year apart in the late 1970s, have just begun a new company, Mascot Coffee, which matches their Hawkeye pride with their love of the java juice.
Both were college athletes and developed the company for a few years before making a deal to sell Hawkeye Gold in 2011.

SHUEYVILLE– Residents of this northwest Johnson County community, and commuters passing through, will soon become accustomed to the sight of orange barriers, detour signs and heavy machinery.
The long-discussed, long-awaited and much anticipated rebuilding of 120th Street is on.


First reading of burn restrictions passes

SOLON– The first reading of new restrictions for the open burning of landscape waste has been approved by the Solon City Council.
But some residents are still questioning the limits, and one avid gardener is seeking some modifications.
In March, council members endorsed a proposal limiting the burning of yard and garden waste to three days a week between April 1 and May 25 and Oct. 1 through Nov. 25. If adopted by the council, residents would be allowed to burn plant material generated on their property on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. during those periods.
