Food Pantry announces grand opening May 27

SOLON– The Solon Community Food Pantry will host a grand opening ceremony on Sunday, May 27, from 9 a.m. until noon. The pantry opens for clients on Monday, June 4, and will be open weekly on Mondays from 3 until 6 p.m. at the Solon United Methodist Church, 122 N, West St., Solon.
Entry to the food pantry, located in the lower level, is through the back door of the church across from the Solon Fire Station.
Watch for weekly updates, volunteer opportunities, pantry news and needs in the Solon Economist.


Community Foundation of Johnson County golf outing

IOWA CITY– Online registration for the sixth annual “Tee Off for Philanthropy– Team Up for Community” golf outing has opened. Golfers may register on-line at http://communityfoundationofjohnsoncounty.org/pages/golf-outing-rsvp.php.
The annual golf outing is held on the Monday preceding the annual Memorial Day holiday weekend. This year’s event will be held May 21 at the Brown Deer Golf Course and Country Club in Coralville to benefit the Community Foundation of Johnson County.


NewBo City Market anchor vendor applications due May 31

CEDAR RAPIDS– The area’s first regional year-round market is looking for unique vendors ready to make the NewBo City Market their year-round home. Those wishing to lease a permanent space in the market have until May 31 to apply.
Kurt Friese, director of healthy food and advocacy, is leading the search. “We are looking for local farmers and entrepreneurs who can supply produce year round, or run a small butcher shop, or serve prepared foods, coffee, cheese, baked goods, flowers, etc. At its heart, the market is an effort to bring the best of Iowa food to the public.”

In this case, it’s also literally true.
A band of his Music4Life students will play a small set at the annual Blues & BBQ event Saturday, May 26, a new twist for the sixth annual community festival. Student performers have not been part of the lineup before, noted planning committee member BJ Jaggers.


CCA girls top Pacha Relays at home

TIFFIN– Thursday, April 26, was a very good day for Jane Astor’s Clear Creek Amana (CCA) girls’ track and field team as they won their home meet, the Pacha Relays.
The Clippers totaled 150 team points to dominate the eight-team field.

TIFFIN– The Clipper boys’ track and field team from Clear Creek Amana (CCA) had a good showing on their home track Thursday, April 26, for the annual running of the Pacha Relays. Tony Brack’s gentlemen finished second in team points with 109 behind Iowa City Regina (130) and ahead of WaMaC rival Mount Vernon (4th with 84).


West girls tennis team sweeps Prairie at home

IOWA CITY– Coach Rich Redfern’s Women of Troy took to the courts Tuesday, April 24, to face-off against Cedar Rapids Prairie in a MVC tennis match. West handled the Prairie Hawks 9-0.

Life Church donation covers what food assistance cannot

NORTH LIBERTY– To most parents, preparing kids for school means loading up a backpack with tablets and pencils, crayons, tissue boxes and paint sets.
Many don’t think of the other things so important in preparing for school: clean clothes, washed hair and daily baths.
“We want them coming to school ready to learn, ” said Kris Hynek, coordinator at the Family Resource Center at Penn Elementary School.

TIFFIN— The mantra “stop, look and listen” we learned in grade school apparently is no longer enough.
In a push to increase safety at its railroad crossings, the Iowa Interstate railroad (IAIS) wants more of its grade crossings to be signalized.


UI DeGowin blood drive to be May 14

IOWA CITY– The University of Iowa DeGowin Blood Center will hold a blood drive at the North Liberty Recreation Center on Monday, May 14, from 4 until 7 p.m. in the Gerdin Conference Rooms 1 and 3.
To be eligible to donate blood a person must:
• Be 17 years old or 16 with parental consent.
• Weigh at least 110 pounds.
• Be cold or flu symptom-free for five days.
• Pass a mini-physical and medical history inquiry.
• Have a photo ID.
• Know Social Security or driver’s license number.
• Drink fluids and have a meal prior to donation.
• Bring a list of current medications.
