Come visit the International Fair at Solon Middle School May 3

The Solon Middle School sixth grade International Fair will be held Thursday, May 3, from 9 until 10:30 a.m. at the Solon Middle School gymnasium.
Sixth grade student groups will showcase the research they gathered at their country booths. Each group researched the topics of people/culture, industry, land/climate, natural resources, agriculture, and current events. Some countries represented at the fair include Argentina, Belize, France, Ghana, Italy, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Turkey, Zimbabwe and many more.


Senior graduation information

We will be sending home notification to all senior parents with complete information regarding graduation; commencement ticket information, graduate’s practice schedule, academic expectations, fees, etc. $15 Payment for the senior luncheon following commencement practice and class flower for the graduation ceremony will be due no later than Friday, May 18– payable to “Solon Schools.” Reminder– cap/gown/stole/tassel and tickets for floor seating will be handed out to graduates at practice following the senior meal on Friday, May 18.


Senior awards night

The community is cordially invited to celebrate with the class of 2012 at the annual senior awards night. The program will be held in the Solon Middle School auditorium on Tuesday, May 15, at 7 p.m. This is the night that numerous scholarships and award recognitions are presented to the members of the senior class. A reception sponsored by Solon Dollars for Scholars will give the community a chance to congratulate the seniors.


HS counselor alternative hours

Summer Reading Program preview

Information will be ready by the middle of May about this year’s Summer Reading Program with a night theme. The Summer Reading Program kick-off party will be on Thursday, May 31, from 5 until 6:30 p.m. Pick up your reading logs and hear about the great fun prizes and programs that the staff is preparing. Reading logs will not be available until the night of the kick-off party.
A special kick-off party for grade five and above will be held on Saturday, June 2, from 6 until 8 p.m. featuring a movie and snacks.


Redefining the young adult section

Jen Leveck, youth services librarian, has undertaken an ambitious project in the young adult section of the library. Currently the YA section houses books for fifth grade through high school. Ms. Leveck will be separating the section further to create a new teen section, which will label books for middle school (fifth grade) on up and the YA section will be designated for high school students and older. “This change will help students and parents select book content that is more age-appropriate for their middle schoolers,” added Leveck.


Solon Retirement Village book club

Solon Public Library is working with the Solon Retirement Village by providing books for a book club for the residents. The book is read first and then followed by watching the movie of the same title. Several newer titles have been completed. The current selection is “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Anyone wishing to offer a suggestion may pass it along to Kris at 319-624-2678.


Solon Area Book Club

Solon Area Book Club will meet May 15 to discuss “Strength In What Remains” by Tracy Kidder. All interested adult readers are welcome to attend. Early out movie tomorrow

The early out program for Thursday, May 3, will be a movie, “Despicable Me,” (rated PG) showing in the meeting room. Movie time will be from 1 until 3 p.m. Fun and free early-out activities are for all Solon students. There is no registration. Children under the age of 10 attending the movie need to be picked up by parents or caregivers at 3 p.m.
This is the last early out movie of the school year. The final early out activity for this school year will be a balloon rocket craft on Thursday, May 17.
