NORTH LIBERTY– In 1908, scientists were just beginning to consider the possibilities of atomic energy, and the world had just witnessed its first passenger air flight. It was the year of Ford’s first Model T, the nation’s first celebration of Mother’s Day, and the first home of its kind built in North Liberty, the Samuel Ranshaw house.
The old home on the corner of Penn Street and Community Drive in North Liberty, vacant and sleeping largely undisturbed since 2005, is being revived for a new generation of the town’s population.

SOLON– The Solon American Legion Riders have scheduled their annual poker run for May 12. The route travels to Marshalltown, Newton, Knoxville, Oskaloosa and Riverside and returns to Solon for the drawing of cards and food, which will be available for a free-will donation. Registration begins at 8 a.m., with last bike out by 9:30 a.m. Last bike in by 6 p.m. for the poker draw. Cost is $10 per bike and $5 per passenger. Proceeds help fund a $500 scholarship for a graduating Solon senior and other rider projects.

DES MOINES– Solon’s girls got a chance to run against the best at the Drake Relays last week and emerged looking pretty good, especially against the competition they should see in post-season.
Drake is a showcase of the best of the state’s track and field athletes, alongside university, college and special invitation classes. The Spartans had entries in nine girls’ events.

The Solon Middle School sixth grade International Fair will be held Thursday, May 3, from 9 until 10:30 a.m. at the Solon Middle School gymnasium.
Sixth grade student groups will showcase the research they gathered at their country booths. Each group researched the topics of people/culture, industry, land/climate, natural resources, agriculture, and current events. Some countries represented at the fair include Argentina, Belize, France, Ghana, Italy, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Turkey, Zimbabwe and many more.

The community is cordially invited to celebrate with the class of 2012 at the annual senior awards night. The program will be held in the Solon Middle School auditorium on Tuesday, May 15, at 7 p.m. This is the night that numerous scholarships and award recognitions are presented to the members of the senior class. A reception sponsored by Solon Dollars for Scholars will give the community a chance to congratulate the seniors.
