Closed for Memorial Day

The library will be closed on Monday, May 28, for Memorial Day and will reopen at noon on Tuesday, May 29. There will be no Storytime on Tuesday, May 29. Summer library hours begin on Friday, June 1. A reminder to students, that even though school will be out for the summer on May 29, the library will not be on summer hours until June 1.

Solon churches to co-sponsor ‘Griefshare’ support group

SOLON– St. Mary Catholic Church, Solon United Methodist Church and Our Lord’s Church of Solon are co-sponsoring a community support group for those experiencing loss in their lives. “Griefshare” will begin Thursday, June 7, at 6:30 p.m. in the library at St. Mary. “Griefshare” is a program to help individuals cope with the loss of a loved one.


Mighty mission packed into little library

SOLON– The best things in life really are still free.
And books are some of the best life has to offer.
That’s why Solon’s Jack Neuzil chose to initiate Solon’s first Little Free Library just outside Solon in the north Twin View Heights subdivision.
“Even in this digital age, books still appeal,” said Neuzil.


Solon school board bumps lunch prices for 2012-13

SOLON– School lunches will jump next year in all three Solon schools and for staff.
Lakeview Elementary students will pay an additional 30¢, while middle school prices will increase 20¢, and high school meals will cost an extra 35¢. Adults will pay $3 for meals.
The increases, approved by the Solon school board last week, are expected to add $43,000 to the district’s nutrition coffers.


House 73 primary forum May 23 in Solon

SOLON– The Johnson County League of Women Voters will host a candidate forum for the Iowa House District 73 Primary between Democratic candidates David Johnson and Dick Schwab Wednesday, May 23, at the Solon Public Library beginning at 7 p.m.


Lady Spartan food drive at May 23 home opener

The Solon softball team requests that people who come to their May 23 game bring a nonperishable food item to donate to the Solon Food Pantry. It will be their first home game against Davenport Assumption. The junior varsity game is scheduled for 6 p.m., with varsity to follow at 7:30 p.m.
There will also be a “Strike Out Cancer” night on June 4. They will again be selling “Strike Out Cancer” T-shirts. Place a T-shirt order by calling 319-530-3262. Game time is 6 p.m.


Veteran’s trail dedication ceremony

IOWA CITY– The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District, will be honoring local military veterans on Memorial Day, May 28, at 1:30 p.m. at Coralville Lake. The 45-minute ceremony will be conducted at the East Overlook Picnic Area located on the east side of the dam at Coralville Lake. The public is invited to help recognize and honor these Johnson County Veterans.
Honorees for this year’s dedication are:
• David H. Brenneman for courage and dedication while serving with the U.S. Army during World War II. Service Dates: May 4, 1944 until Feb. 5, 1946, Purple Heart.


Second District Republican candidate forum in Tiffin

IOWA CITY– The Johnson County Republicans will hold a Second District Congressional Candidate Forum for candidates Dan Dolan and John Archer with Prof. Tim Hagle as moderator.
The forum will begin at 7 p.m., Thursday, May 24, at Clear Creek Amana High School. 551 W Marengo Rd, Tiffin.
Questions will come from the Johnson County Republican Central Committee.


Johnson County Conservation Board vacancies

IOWA CITY– The Johnson County Board of Supervisors has announced a vacancy on the Johnson County Conservation Board. This is a five-year term ending December 31, 2015.
Duties include responsibility for all real and personal property acquired by the county for public museums, parks, playgrounds, recreation centers and other county recreation purposes. They shall also plan, develop, preserve, administer and maintain all such areas previously described. Prepare an annual budget for the Johnson County Conservation Department.
Successful candidates must be an eligible elector of Johnson County.


Clipper boys win 2-1 against Solon

TIFFIN– Sometimes a loss can rejuvenate a team and spur them on to victory the next go-around. For the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) boys varsity soccer squad, a recent loss to West Delaware may have added a little more fuel to their fire Thursday evening as friendly rival Solon came to town.
“We remembered how to win,” coach Tim Benson said after CCA’s 2-1 WaMaC victory, the first over the Spartans in recent years and a much better showing than last year’s blow-out in Solon.
