PowerSchool e-registration

For the 2012-2013 school year, Solon Community Schools will be once again be using an e-registration process accessible through PowerSchool. This process will use the same login information parents of middle school and high school students use to check grades via PowerSchool. Parents of incoming preschool and Kindergarten students will be mailed access IDs and passwords in early June. We are encouraging all families to use e-registration, therefore we will be setting up computers at the central office to assist families with completing e-registration.


Customize school district notification system preferences

The Solon Community School District’s primary method to report school closings and delays is local television (KCRG, KGAN, and KWWL) and radio station (WMT, KHAK, KDAT, KRNA, KZIA, and KCJJ) announcements. The School Messenger Notification System is a secondary public announcement that delivers personalized phone, text message and/or e-mail messages to parents, staff or other groups via home, office and or cell phones.


Holiday schedule

Due to the 4th of July holiday next week, there will be no scheduled programs at the library for Summer Reading Program. This includes Storytime, Teens on Tuesdays At 2, Family Night and Afternoon Adventurers activities. The library will be closed on Wednesday, July 4, and have regular summer hours the balance of the week. Continue working on the reading logs and T-shirt challenge sheets.

City’s fourth well to come to the rescue soon

SOLON– One big shock to the system and hopefully all will be well.
The city’s fourth well will be put into production soon, if a large-dose shock chlorination treatment does what it’s expected to do.
Well No. 4 was substantially completed in February 2011, but delays in the construction of an associated project have kept it on the shelf, allowing bacteria to breed.
The bacteria do not present a health issue, according to Solon Public Works Director Scott Kleppe, but have created an odor.
“The water’s fine,” Kleppe said, “it just stinks.”


Garbage pickup not affected by Fourth of July holiday

Garbage and recycling pick-up for residents of Solon will remain the same for the week of the Independence Day holiday. Curbside collection will be Friday, July 6.


Our Lord’s Church July 4 sale

Our Lord’s Church will be having an antique, kolache and ice cream sandwich sale July 4. A cool place to hang out for a little bit on the 4th. The sale will be open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you have any questions, call Duane or Anna at 319-841-2243.


Fireworks over Lake Macbride on July 4

SOLON– Fireworks will start about dark on Independence Day at Lake Macbride.
There will be a boat parade that is open to everyone. Decorate your boat and meet at the causeway at 4 p.m. Donations may be sent to Mark Ramsey, 1598 Spartan Cir. Solon, IA 52333. Rain date is Saturday, July 7. Call 319-624-3026 for more information.


Hue Hill Farms: <br>Locavorists thriving in corridor

MORSE– Many in the Iowa City-Cedar Rapids corridor know locavore numbers are growing. A locavore, for those not familiar with the Oxford American Dictionary’s 2007 word of the year, is someone who eats locally-grown food.


District ‘hiring for fit’ at Lakeview, middle school

SOLON– The board of directors for the Solon Community School District last month expanded the job search for guidance counselors at Lakeview and Solon Middle School. In the job description, the “guidance counselor or other” job title was changed to include an option for a facilitator with an administrative degree.
Many see the new positions as a step away from having assistant principals in the two Solon schools.
Tony Nicol will fill the position at the middle school and Lori Grimoskas will start at Lakeview in 2012-2013.
