The next meeting of the Solon Area Book Club will be Tuesday, June 19, at 6:30 p.m. at the library. Members will be reading mysteries of their choice and sharing their impressions with the group. Check out a book by your favorite mystery writer and come and share it with fellow readers.

SOLON– The Solon American Legion will host a breakfast on Sunday, June 24, from 7:30 a.m. until noon. The menu will be the usual all-you-can eat at a reasonable price. Proceeds will be used to support the Johnson County American Legion Baseball Program. Come in and bring your friends and family for a great breakfast, and help support the American Legion Baseball Program.

SOLON– With a grant from the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS), Solon school nutrition director Kelly Crossley and the Lakeview PTO have teamed up to bring students the freshest produce you can get.
On five raised beds on the primary school’s campus, five classes and one preschool class planted carrots, onions, peppers, tomatoes and more on May 15.
“These beds are meant to be primarily a teaching tool for the classroom,” Crossley said, adding her biggest concern was watering the garden during a dry spring.

The Solon Optimist Club summer bike rodeo will be held Saturday, June 23, at the middle school play area at 9 a.m. (8:30 a.m. sign-up). There are five age brackets: training wheels, four to five year olds, six and seven year olds, eight and nine year olds, and 10 and 11 year olds. There will be five contests, including balance, steering and paper toss. There will be a boy and girl division for each age bracket. Each age bracket will have first, second and third place trophies; also two overall championship trophies. Come practice your bicycle skills. Be sure to wear your helmet.

Lonnie Olson (Mrs. Bill Olson) passed away quietly and before her time, in Haines City, Fla. late last month. Lonnie was a good friend and wonderful neighbor to many of us in the Solon area. While she was gone before most of us knew the details and could express our sympathy, we have found many of us would like to have some kind of memorial for her in lieu of flowers. Sadly, the Olson’s lost their oldest son, Tim, some years back, and a tree was planted in his honor near the School’s Sports Center.
