Frances Reed

Frances Agnes Reed, 92, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, July 23, 2012, at Living Center West. Services were held July 26 at St. Patrick Catholic Church by the Rev. Ivan Nienhaus.
Frances was born Dec. 9, 1919, in Holbrook, the daughter of Francis and Agnes (Kelly) Driscoll and graduated from St. Patrick High School. She married Donald Reed on July 3, 1941, in Cedar Rapids. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church.
Local survivors include her son, Paul of Swisher.
Instead of flowers memorials may be directed to Essence of Life Hospice, 3207 220th Trl., Amana, IA 52203.


Dale Lytle

Dale E. Lytle, 81, of Solon, passed away Tuesday, July 24, 2012, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids. Celebration of Life Service will be held Aug. 5 at the Hiawatha Community Center from 5 until 11 p.m.
Dale was born to Matt and Gladys Lytle on Oct. 7, 1930, in Brookings, S.D. He served his country in the US Army and was sent to Japan for occupational duty from 1948 until 1950 and in Korea from 1950 until 1951. He married Vivian Coughlin on Oct. 7, 1951. He owned Webb’s Transmission Service for 27 years and retired in 1992. He worked part-time for Car Colors for eight years.


Robert Englert

Robert J. “Bob” Englert, 80, of Lisbon, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family Sunday, July 22, 2012, at Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House in Hiawatha. Memorial Services were held July 26 at Morgan Funeral Home, Mount Vernon. Burial followed at the Lisbon Cemetery.
Bob was born in Iowa City to Raymond C. and Mary J. (Mattes) Englert on Sept. 2, 1931. He graduated from St. Patrick’s High School in Iowa City. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict from 1952 until 1954. On Oct. 14, 1954, he married Joyce A. Bohr at St. John’s Catholic Church, Lisbon.

100: Bullet capacity of the drum magazine of the Smith and Wesson M&P 15, the second weapon Holmes used. The gun, which is basically a semi-automatic version of the fully-automatic, military assault rifle called an M16, jammed.
18: Number of seconds he could have shot all 100 bullets if the gun had not jammed.


Food For Thought

We used to look forward to the county fair every summer. We didn’t have a local festival as many towns did even then, much like Beef Days and all the other “days” we now have to choose from every summer. I can think of Corydon’s Old Settler’s Days, Britt’s Hobo Days, and Pella’s Tulip Time, to name a few. The best we could hope for, besides the fair, was that a traveling circus would come to town. These weren’t always accompanied by carnival rides, and they were often rather small affairs– sometimes only a few acts and some caged animals to view.

Not what they expected

FT. DODGE– It wasn’t the finish they were expecting.
The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers varsity softball team, under the leadership of coach Jim White, defeated Washington 6-2 Friday afternoon at the Class 4A state softball tournament. The win earned the squad the third-place trophy after a 3-0 semifinal loss to Indianola Thursday knocked them into the consolation bracket.


Not the Champs, but forever the first

FT. DODGE– They didn’t come away as the Class 5A state champions, but the West High Women of Troy returned to Iowa City as the first softball team from West to make it to the State Tournament.
And you can’t take that distinction away from them.


Trojans heading to state (again)

IOWA CITY– The West High Trojans came back from a 2-0 deficit to win 4-2 over the Rams of Dubuque Senior Wednesday night at home in a nine-inning Class 4A substate final.
It was a pitchers’ duel through four innings as West’s Kellen Yoder and Seniors’ Alex Steines shut-out the other’s batters. The Trojans threatened in the top of the fourth as Reid Bonner made it to third, but ended up stranded along with Declan Doyle (at second).


DeGowin blood drive at NL Rec Center Aug. 6

IOWA CITY— The University of Iowa DeGowin Blood Center will hold a blood drive on Monday, Aug. 6, from 4 until 7 pm in the Gerdin Conference Rooms 1 and 3 at the North Liberty Recreation Center.
In an average week, UIHC patients need nearly 600 units of blood products. One pint of donated blood can help save the lives of several people.


Red’s Alehouse hosting Christmas in July food pantry benefit July 25

July 25, Red’s Alehouse in North Liberty is celebrating everyone’s favorite time of the year in the summer, and you will be able to enjoy great Christmas beverages and donate money to charity while you do it. So here’s the deal, Red’s Alehouse will be matching donations received in their tip jar during Christmas in July to the North Liberty Community Pantry. The evening will start at 6 p.m.
