Solon UMC football dinner Sept. 8

SOLON– Solon United Methodist Church will host a football luncheon before the Iowa Hawkeye football game on Saturday, Sept. 8, beginning at 8 a.m. All are welcome.
Proceeds will be going to the Solon Habitat for Humanity project. Please come, enjoy the food, support the Habitat project.

Our DVD collection now has over 900 titles! Latest additions include:
“Hunger Games” (2012, PG13, Action/SciFi) Based on the phenomenally popular novel by Suzanne Collins, this is the film adaptation of the first book of a trilogy, set in a future where the government selects a boy and girl from each of the 12 districts to fight to the death on live television. Katniss Everdeen volunteers to take her younger sister’s place for the latest match. We have three copies to help make the waiting list shorter.


Fall hours and holiday closing

The library will be closed on Monday, Sept. 3, in observance of Labor Day. Beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 4, regular library hours will resume which means the library will not open until noon on most weekdays. Regular library hours are: Monday through Thursday, noon until 8 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Due to Memorial Day the pantry will be open Tuesday, Sept. 4, from 3 until 7 p.m. at the Solon United Methodist Church.


It will pay to shop local in September

SOLON– Contractors will be tearing up the town in September.
As the reconstruction of Main Street in Solon gains steam, the City of Solon and the Solon Economic Development Group (SEDG) are teaming up for a campaign to urge residents to continue shopping locally.
“RE-MAIN IN SOLON” will be a purchase-based prize giveaway running Wednesday, Sept. 5, through Wednesday, Sept. 19.
The grand prize will be a flat screen LED television (approximately 42-inch, $700 value) or $500 cash.


Solon Dollars for Scholars

SOLON– Solon Dollars for Scholars has no problem making a case for return on its investment. Through the organization’s Continuing Education Scholarship (CES) program, it is investing in everyone’s future.
The local organization recently signed checks totaling $25,500 to support the ongoing education of 11 Solon graduates who are working to complete their four-year degrees.


Solon council approves Prairie Acres expansion

SOLON– Little by little, Solon continues to grow into its residential subdivisions.
Two more sections of new residential lots– sections four and five of Prairie Acres– were approved at a recent council meeting.
Prairie Acres is one of three currently active housing developments in Solon, located on the eastern side of the city in the vicinity of Plum Street and Raymond Drive.


Softball coach Sorden resigns

SOLON– The Solon Community School District (SCSD) will be looking for another head coach.
Activities director Keith McSweeney announced late Monday afternoon that head girls’ softball coach Ben Sorden has decided to pursue other coaching opportunities at the collegiate level.


Sutliff Bridge street dance set for Sept. 2

The Sutliff Bridge Authority will hold its Labor Day Street Dance fundraiser on Sunday, Sept. 2, from 1 until 5 p.m. adjacent to the bridge with music by the
Hot Hand Blues Band. Gates open at noon.
Donation of $5 at gate goes toward future preservation of the bridge.
Food and beverage will be available for purchase. Please no coolers.


Former Spartan softball pitcher Courtney (Strang) Kovacs was twice state champ in ’03, ‘07

SOLON– A little over a year ago Courtney Strang was married to Jim Kovacs, a Winona State baseball pitcher.
Now the newlywed and Solon standout pitcher has been named to the state high school athletic hall of fame after former Coach John Begley, now coaching at Jesup High School, nominated her for the recognition. He called her in March to give her the news.
Courtney, who was surprised by the news, said, “It was a great feeling.” She didn’t even know she was eligible for the honor and was grateful to her former coach for the nomination.
