MidWestOne Bank book drive for BookEnd to end Sept. 30

IOWA CITY– Special deposits of books will be accepted at area MidWestOne Banks during September. Local banks are hosting a book drive for the BookEnd used bookstore of the Iowa City Public Library Friends Foundation. The BookEnd is inside the Iowa City Public Library.
The seventh annual collection effort by MidWestOne Banks started on Sept. 1 and continues through Sept. 30.


Operation ReLeaf to be held Sept. 22

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Parks Department is hosting Alliant Energy’s Operation ReLeaf Residential Tree Distribution in North Liberty on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 9-11 a.m. at the North Liberty Community Center. This program is a partnership between Alliant Energy, Iowa Department of Natural Resources Forestry Bureau, and the City of North Liberty.  
The goal of Operation ReLeaf is to reduce energy consumption through proper tree placement around residential or commercial buildings. There will also be a tree planting and care workshop at the event.


Monroe Hustlers 4-H Club donates U.S. flag

IOWA CITY– The Monroe Hustlers 4-H Club, based in northern Johnson County, donated a new U.S. flag to Johnson County Extension. The flag was flown over the Johnson County Extension Office during the 2012 Johnson County 4-H/FFA County Fair held July 23 though 26. IOWA CITY– When Terri Carmouche of North Liberty joined the Marines, she expected to see the world abroad. She anticipated exposure to new cultures and new experiences.
She wasn’t prepared, however, to witness firsthand the salacious horror of school-aged children being sold for sex.

OXFORD— Call it trying to strike a balance.
The board of directors for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school district approved the first reading of a revised policy addressing athletic practices and other school activities on Wednesday nights and Sunday at their Aug. 15 regular monthly meeting in Oxford. The issue first came up last spring when the board received correspondence from some concerned parents asking to have Sunday practices abolished.


Long-range plan puts new high school last

IOWA CITY– A majority of board members indicated their willingness to release funds previously slated for a new high school and put them to use in a facilities timeline that includes mostly existing buildings.
Board members generally agreed with a facilities plan from the ICCSD administration, and both groups seem intent on fixing up several grade schools, building a new elementary school in Coralville or North Liberty by 2015 and putting an addition on North Central Junior High school (NCJHS).


Local candidates receive help in state house bids

JOHNSON COUNTY– They’re outnumbered two-to-one, according to the latest voter registration numbers from the Johnson County Auditor’s Office. Their party hasn’t had a winner in the northern part of the county since 1994. But Republican candidates for the Iowa State House of Representatives, Bobby Kaufmann and Steve Sherman, soldier on.
And they’re getting some help from some pretty influential people.


Newest addition opens

SOLON– The Solon Retirement Village announced the opening of its dedicated skilled/acute care building on July 24, the newest addition to the retirement campus. An open house for the general public was held Wednesday, July 18.
The skilled/acute care area will accommodate 13 individuals with needs for short-term skilled in an addition constructed on the southeast side of the Solon Nursing Care Center. The campus received approval from the state to add these skilled beds last November, in addition to gaining approval to build a new CCDI Memory Care which opened in May of this year.


Summer heat to autumn cool for runners

ATKINS– With their first race in autumn-like weather, Solon’s cross country teams responded with three wins and a fourth place at the annual ‘Run Through the Woods’ in Atkins at the Benton Invitational, Sept. 9.
That followed a blistering 90-degree reading earlier in the week. Still, the Class 3A third-ranked Spartan girls held close to No. 1 Assumption of Davenport in the 19-school Sept. 4 Tipton Invitational. The Solon boys were sixth among the 21 full teams competing in the sun-baked run through Tipton City Park.


Just what the doctor ordered

SOLON– It took all of 10 seconds for the Solon Spartans to feel better about themselves.
Jordan Wymer took Mount Pleasant’s opening kickoff 95 yards for a score, and the rout was on.
Solon scored 42 points in the first quarter and let the continuous clock run in the second half for a 56-6 win.
“It was a great win, one in which we really needed to get our confidence back,” said head coach Kevin Miller.  “I thought as a whole we executed much better in all phases of the game, especially on special teams.”
