Main Street may lack holiday decorations

SOLON– Solon’s Main Street may not look quite as festive this holiday season.
The Christmas decorations traditionally attached to utility poles on Solon’s main thoroughfares are apparently not compatible with the period lighting being added as part of a Main Street reconstruction project.
As a result, there may be no holiday lights hanging around downtown.
Members of the Solon City Council discussed the pending problem at a special meeting Aug. 29, but no solution was reached.


Solon department’s new fire engine due next spring

SOLON— Next spring when the fire department pagers go off, Solon’s bravest will ride-out in a brand new fire engine. The $480,000 pumper is being built by Toyne, Inc. of Breda, and is expected to be delivered in late April or early May according to Solon firefighter Bob Siddell.


St. Mary Harvest Festival Sept. 30

SOLON– Saint Mary Catholic Church will hold a Harvest Festival on Sunday, Sept. 30, from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the church. A pork and chicken dinner will be served at a cost of $10 for adults and $6 for children aged 6 through 12. Tickets will be sold after weekend Mass or during the week at church. Carry out is available.
The Harvest Festival includes dinner, family and children activities, a country store and a silent auction.


Questions about new SCSD grading guidelines?

SOLON– Solon High School will be hosting parent information meetings on the new grading guidelines and standards based grading system. The presentations will provide information on the new system and a question and answer session. Students are welcome to attend.
All meetings will be held in the Solon High School media center. The times are listed below:
• Thursday, Sept. 20, 3 p.m.
• Thursday, Sept. 20, 5 p.m.
• Thursday, Sept. 20, 7 p.m.
• Monday, Sept. 24, 7 p.m.
• Wednesday, Sept. 26, 7:30 a.m. (Note the morning time).
• Sunday, Sept. 30, 7 p.m.


Legion spaghetti supper scholarship fundraiser Sept. 19

SOLON– The Solon American Legion will hold an all-you-can-eat spaghetti supper on Wednesday, Sept. 19, serving from 4:30 until 7 p.m., at the Legion hall.
The cost is $7 for adults, $4 for children, and children under five eat free.
The all-you-can-eat meal includes spaghetti, homemade sauce, French bread, green tossed salad, assorted dressings, homemade desserts, milk and lemonade.
Proceeds are for merit awards for Solon 2013 graduating seniors.


Asbestos removal next for new city hall project

SOLON– It might be a while before Solon’s new city hall takes shape.
The City of Solon took possession of 100 W. Main St. in July, intending to convert the two-story location formerly known as the Candy Store into city offices and council chambers.
Asbestos removal has been scheduled for the beginning of October, but council members are in no hurry to rush the project.


Dedication of Ciha Fen Sept. 22

SOLON– The Johnson County Conservation Board (JCCB) is excited to announce the celebration of one of its crowning achievements in conservation– the acquisition of the Ciha Fen Preserve. On Saturday, Sept. 22, the JCCB will be hosting a public dedication to celebrate the protection of this rare natural area which was purchased with funds from the Iowa DNR Resource Enhancement and Protection (REAP) cost-share grant and Johnson County Conservation Bond funds. The celebration will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Ciha Fen Preserve, which is located at 5656 145th St. NE, Lisbon.


Homecoming parade to change

The Solon High School Homecoming Parade route (Sept. 19) will be changing due to Main Street construction. The parade will begin at the middle school, then follow Short Street to Sovers Street to Racine Avenue to Spartan Stadium, where the pep rally and king coronation will occur.


Hawk Talk

One of the great things about following college football (or pro football) is that it only happens once a week.
If your team wins (like the Hawkeyes) you have all week to enjoy the victory, watch the replay of the game  (if you tape it like me) and break down the win.
The dark side is if you lose, you have a whole week of some sport writers ripping the Hawks, the message boards ready to fire every coach and a long week to deal with the negatives.
It’s even worse when your pro team (Da Bears) loses like they did to the Packers Thursday.
