New justice center blocked

By Lori Lindner
North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY– The ballot measure for a new $46.8 million justice center in Johnson County was shot down last Tuesday, Nov. 6.
With a total count of 35,403 to 28,202, (unofficial until Wednesday’s canvass) a majority of the county’s 75,463 voters said yes, but the measure required 60 percent of the total vote to pass. It only received 56 percent.
Johnson County supervisor Terrence Neuzil said there were obviously things about the proposal that residents didn’t like, but its narrow defeat indicates there is still momentum to address the issue.

SOLON– When that last point fell against them, tears streamed down the faces of the Lady Spartans’ volleyball team.
They hugged, then they wiped their eyes and stood with the runner-up trophy in the center of the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.
Solon, ranked No. 6 in Class 4A, had taken on the top three seeds in the tournament and had almost run the table, just running out of points to play against the No. 1 team, Charles City, in the 4A final Saturday in Cedar Rapids.

Solon’s Troy Wentzien honored at ICCSD dedication ceremony

IOWA CITY– Area students can thank the pioneering work of an Iowa City Community School District employee named H. Troy Wentzien (pronounced went-zeen) who led the way in bringing ICCSD (and Solon) school technology to the front of the class in Iowa and the U.S.
Starting in 1993, Wentzien built ICCSD’s system-wide network, even updating to fiber optic lines, in a process that continues today as nearly all ICCSD schools are lined with fiber optic networks.
