Supervisors hoping cities will help fund service

IOWA CITY– Contracts with Iowa City and Coralville for the county-wide para-transit bus service, SEATS, will expire at the end of June. But Johnson County supervisors have already decided they want to end their subsidy of the service.
The program provides riders around the county with door-to-door transport and anyone outside the city limits of Iowa City, Coralville, North Liberty and University Heights can request a ride that comes with a half-hour window for pick-ups.

Solon Methodist Church soup supper Feb. 8

SOLON– The Annual Solon United Methodist Church Soup Supper will be held Friday, Feb. 8, at the church, serving from 5 until 7 p.m. The menu includes oyster stew, chicken noodle soup or chili, hotdogs, relish, pie, and beverage for $6 adults and $4 children under 12. There will also be live entertainment.


New Griefshare session begins Jan. 31

SOLON– St. Mary Catholic Church, Solon United Methodist Church and Our Lord’s Church of Solon are co-sponsoring a community support group for those experiencing loss in their lives. Griefshare will begin Thursday, Jan. 31, in the adult room at St. Mary. Griefshare is a program to help individuals cope with the loss of a loved one and to once again experience joy in their lives.


Solon softball/baseball teams can drive Feb. 9

SOLON– The Solon High School softball and baseball programs are conducting a can drive on Feb. 9 from 1 until 5 p.m. to raise money for an indoor hitting facility project.
The goal is to eventually build or rehab a shed on district property that can be used year round (but primarily during the winter months) for indoor hitting and throwing training for softball and baseball players. Softball and baseball players will be going door to door to collect cans/bottles.


Local riders compete at state team sorting finals in Illinois

BRIMFIELD, Ill.– Area residents had a good weekend Dec. 1 and 2 at the Illinois State Team Sorting Finals held in Brimfield, Ill. Almost 200 teams competed and the high money winner for the weekend was Robert Sentman of Tiffin. Robert also won a buckle for the Level 2 Division and tied for the Masters (over 50 class) Buckle. Winning the Open buckle was Josh Cochran of Williamsburg. Matt Collins of North Liberty won the Novice Buckle and Nicholas Collins won the Beginner Buckle.

Iowa City West whips Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Waterloo West

CEDAR RAPIDS– A late December snowstorm only postponed the inevitable for the Cedar Rapids Kennedy and Waterloo West wrestlers. A double-dual meet originally scheduled for Dec. 20 was rescheduled to Thursday night, and for Iowa City West it was worth the wait. Mark Reiland’s Trojans reigned supreme defeating the Kennedy Cougars 60-22 and the Waterloo West Wahawks 68-8.


IC West confounds CR Kennedy, 77-44

IOWA CITY– The West High Trojans continued their march to Des Moines, with hopes of defending their Class 4A State Championship, by dismantling the Cedar Rapids Kennedy Cougars 77-44 Tuesday night at home.
The Cougars led briefly, very briefly, at the start of the game by taking a 2-0 lead. After that, it was all West, all the time.
Myzeah Batie-Gaddy scored to tie on his way to an 18-point night. Wyatt Lohaus dropped-in a layup just ahead of the period-ending buzzer, giving the Trojans a 21-7 advantage.

NORTH LIBERTY– The City of North Liberty’s Hometown Rewards program and J.M. Swank, ConAgra Foods’ national food ingredients distribution business, are inviting local business representatives to a panel discussion on energy-efficiency rebates and incentives for businesses.
The North Liberty Hometown Rewards program– sponsored by Alliant Energy– is a community wide effort to promote energy-efficient behavior and investment in energy-efficient upgrades. J.M. Swank, headquartered in North Liberty, is a leader in energy-efficiency and sustainability practices.
