Rosalie Hinshaw, 76, of Marion, formerly of Newton, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2013, at her home. A funeral service was held Jan. 24 at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. Burial was at Our Silent City Cemetery in Kellogg.


Frances Dubishar

Frances “Fran” L. Dubishar, 86, of Amana, died Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, at the Solon Nursing and Rehab Skilled Center in Solon. Celebration of Life was Jan. 25 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, with the Rev. Mike Townsley presiding. Burial followed in Czech National Cemetery.


Virgil Davis Jr.

Virgil E. Davis Jr., 61, of Washington, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Funeral services were held Jan. 21 at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City, with military honors following.
Virgil E. Davis Jr. was born Dec. 16, 1951, in Fairfield, the son of Virgil E. Davis Sr. and Lorraine M. (Shalla) Davis. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. For many years Virgil worked as a subcontractor for floor furnishing stores as a floor covering specialist. He later worked as manager for AutoZone in Washington.

Rita Rose Brooks, 90, a longtime resident of Coralville, died suddenly Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, at Mercy Iowa City.

Strangers on the beach

Sabra and I have been to the resort area of Playa Del Carmen, Mexico, several times. We get there by flying from the Cedar Rapids airport, about a dozen miles from our house. I say we’re going to the land of the endless buffet because not only can you eat nearly around the clock under the all-inclusive package, but also the variety of food seems to go on into infinity as the workers switch out one sumptuous dish for another.

My friend and fellow writer Ethel Barker started out to write a novel, for young adult readers, about a piece of Iowa history that had fascinated her for years. Titled “For the Love of Pete,” the story is about three young children who were transported from New York City to the Midwest in an effort to give them a better chance in life. Commonly known as “orphan trains,” though a good many of the children were not technically orphans, the trains transported over 200,000 children from the slums of New York to 45 states, where they were fostered or adopted by families.

CCA wins double dual at English Valley, give it up to Benton Community, Vinton-Shellsburg

NORTH ENGLISH– A tough season got a little brighter Monday, Jan. 14, as Jared Carder’s Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity wrestlers won a double dual meet against English Valley and Lone Tree at North English.
Colton Beckler took an 8-2 decision from Lone Tree’s Jake Viner at 126 pounds, Jacob Wessling won by fall in 3:02 at 138 pounds against Thomas Tryon of Lone Tree and Nate Langrehr took the 145-pound match with a win by fall in 1:10 over Lone Tree’s Drake Dauber. At 152 pounds, Stephen Jensen pinned Lone Tree’s Trevor Rogers in 4:39.

CPU standout leads Pointers past Clippers, 65-48

TIFFIN– Joshua Jirak pounded in 37 points to lead the Center Point-Urbana (CPU) Stormin’ Pointers past the struggling Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers Tuesday night on the Clippers’ home hardwood. The Pointers took the late-starting varsity game 65-48, dropping the Clippers to 2-11 as the regular season heads for the home stretch.

SWISHER– The Swisher Sharp Shooters and Swisher Junior Auxiliary will hold a benefit breakfast Saturday, Feb. 9, from 7 until 11 a.m. at the Swisher American Legion.

SWISHER– Join the fun at the Swisher American Legion on Saturday, Feb. 9, for a Mardi Gras party and fundraiser.
The Mardi Gras party begins with DJ Bill Tandy from 8 p.m. until midnight, and features karaoke, raffle prizes, and a traditional Mardi Gras King Cake. A trophy will be presented to the person who wears the best Mardi Gras costume of the night.
Team Iowa will tend bar, and all tips will support veterans returning from active duty. Raffle proceeds also benefit veterans. Everyone is welcome.
