County begins trail process with landowners between Ely and Solon

SOLON– To the north, the Cedar Valley Trail connects Waterloo and Cedar Falls to Cedar Rapids.
On the other end, Iowa City, Coralville and North Liberty.
The missing link is in Solon’s back yard.
A five-mile stretch between Ely and Solon is all that separates two extensive networks of trails, and property owners along a proposed path were invited to talk about it for the first time last week.


Community to UNIte for Nora March 2

SOLON– Almost two years old now, Nora’s world should revolve around potty-training, picking a bedtime story and being the center of attention for parents Ben and Michaela Sanderson of Ely.
These days, it is all that and more. Nora is fighting acute lymphoblastic pre-B cell leukemia. Intense chemotherapy will continue for at least two more years. That means normal toddler times take a back seat to bone marrow biopsies, leukemic cells, and making it to doctor appointments through sometimes icy, snowy conditions.


Hawk Talk

Tough weekend for the Hawkeyes

Last weekend wasn’t fun for Hawkeye basketball and wrestling fans.
The men’s basketball team blew a 19-point first half lead and lost at Nebraska, 64-60, on Saturday.
The wrestlers lost two meets to Minnesota and Missouri finishing fourth at the National Dual meet in Minneapolis Saturday afternoon and night.
On Sunday, the Iowa women got beat 66-46 by Nebraska.

Hawkeye Wrestling

We’ll start with wrestling.
Led by a pin from Tony Ramos, the Hawkeye wrestlers knocked off Cornell 21-16 in the first round of the National Dual meet championship last Friday.


Daisy Chipman

Daisy E. Chipman, 93, died peacefully Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013, in Port Charlotte, Fla. following a brief illness.
Funeral Services celebrating Daisy’s life were held Feb. 25 at Lensing’s Oak Hill in Coralville. Burial was at Ridgewood Cemetery in North Liberty. In lieu of flowers, the Daisy Chipman Memorial Fund has been established.
Daisy was born March 30, 1919, in Iowa City, the daughter of Harry and Neta (Southwick) Grout. She was a graduate of Sharon Center High School and attended the University of Iowa. On Aug. 23, 1940, Daisy married Carroll Chipman in Independence.


Veronica Power

Veronica “Bonnie” Power, 83, of Iowa City, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, at her daughter’s home in Phoenix, Ariz. after a brief struggle with cancer.
Mass of Christian Burial was Feb. 23 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Iowa City, with the Very Reverend Rudolph Juarez officiating. Burial followed at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to St. Patrick’s Church or Hospice of the Valley (Phoenix).


Wanda Shaffer

Wanda Louise (Leigh) Shaffer, 91, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, Feb. 15, 2013, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids. Services were held Feb. 20 at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Cedar Rapids, conducted by Pastor Del Bear. Burial was in Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Local Survivors include her grandchild Brandon (Chelsea) Hess of Ely.


Maryan Steichen

Maryan Rose Steichen “Grandma,” 86, of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully in her home on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013, surrounded by her loved ones. Funeral Mass was held Feb. 20 at St. Ludmila’s Catholic Church with burial following in St. Johns Catholic Cemetery.
Maryan was born Oct. 8, 1926, in Granville, the daughter of John Peter and Catherine (Nichel) Schwebach. She married Arthur Steichen on May 8, 1946, in Granville. Maryan and her family attended St. Ludmila’s Catholic Church, raising 10 children. She worked Mercy Home Health Care for over 15 years.

I’ve killed many a musca domestica, aka house fly, in my day.
As a child visiting Wisconsin, one of my favorite barn chores was poisoning the little buggers. Grandma had an old-fashioned pump sprayer, which she filled, I’m guessing, with a capful of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, aka DDT, and water. This was long before we knew that the substance was a scourge to birds, especially ones high on the food chain like hawks and eagles. So spray I did, pumping clouds of toxic vapor in the air.

It was the summer of 1944. I would be starting fourth grade in September. We had moved to our acreage on the edge of Knoxville the preceding March. There were walnut trees, pear trees, raspberry bushes, and an old apple tree– and oddly enough, no cherry trees on what had once been a cherry orchard. My mother was making raspberry jelly from berries we’d picked, and apple butter from some of the summer apples. These early apples, commonly called glass apples, made the best and smoothest apple butter when used before they were fully ripe.

North Liberty Optimists’ annual pancake breakfast to be March 2

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty Optimists will hold their 40th Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, March 2, from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the North Liberty Community Center.
All proceeds go to the youth of North Liberty. Some of what they support includes:
• North Liberty baseball and softball leagues.
• Scouting programs and 4-H.
• North Liberty library, parks and community center.
• North Liberty schools and family resource center.
• Kid friendly holiday food baskets.
• North Liberty Food Pantry.
• Heart Connection (send kids with cancer to camp).
• Youth scholarships.
