CCA to ask for PPEL extension in September

Measure will be on school board ballot

OXFORD– The Physical Plant and Equipment Levy (PPEL) for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) school district expires in December 2015, and superintendent Tim Kuehl wants to ask voters to extend it. Kuehl spoke with the district’s board of directors during their monthly work session and business meeting Monday, July 29, at Clear Creek Elementary in Oxford.

DOT lets you renew in your pajamas

Online driver’s license renewal goes live

DES MOINES– You can do your banking online. You can pay your bills online. It is even possible in some places to order a pizza via your computer.
And now, you can also renew your Iowa Drivers License.
Gov. Terry Branstad signed House File 355 into law on May 15 authorizing electronic renewal for standard operator (Class C) licenses and identification cards with a few restrictions. Mark Lowe, the director of the Iowa Department of Transportation’s (IDOT) Motor Vehicle Division said, “We are looking forward to making the driver’s license renewal process as easy as possible.”

Two killed, three injured in hit-and-run crash near Tiffin

TIFIFN– Two North Liberty residents were killed in a hit-and-run accident at the intersection of Jasper Avenue and Highway 6 in Tiffin Aug. 10.
According to the Iowa State Patrol,
Troy Liddell, 48, and his sister-in-law Kelly Liddell, 50, of North Liberty, were killed when a driver ran a stop sign on Jasper Avenue and struck the 2008 Nissan Xterra driven by Troy Liddell.

Helping students reach their prime

By Eric Hawkinson
North Liberty Leader
NORTH LIBERTY– Learning geography has never tasted so good at the Prime Time Learning Academy in North Liberty. After one student’s suggestion, classes have been constructing maps using sugar cookie dough.
“I think another real beauty of it is that there’s enough freedom, because we don’t have a set curriculum we are responsible for teaching,” said Prime Time owner Julie Robinson. “It’s a win for the kid to see grownups actually took his idea and made it into a lesson that everybody did.”

Registration open for Chamber’s NL Fun Run

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Steering Committee of the Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce is once again hosting its annual morning of fun and fitness event– the North Liberty Fun Run/Walk. The event is being held on Sunday, Sept. 15, at North Bend Elementary and is sponsored by MidWestOne Bank.
It will feature a 5K race in addition to a free race for children 12 and under. Registration begins at 7:15 a.m., with the children’s race beginning at 8 a.m. followed by the 5K at 8:20 a.m. Prizes will be awarded for the fastest male and female runners as well as all participants in costume.

More competitive, with room for improvement

IOWA CITY– Kathy Bresnahan always tells it just like it is. With 22 years at Iowa City West and a 558-174 record with the Women of Troy’s volleyball program, she can afford to.
Bresnahan and her squad overcame the death of friend and teammate Caroline Found in 2011 to go on to a 39-6 record and the team’s second consecutive Class 4A state championship. West was a force to be reckoned with. In contrast, the 2012 season ended with a 20-17 record and the chance at a three-peat thwarted by a 3-2 loss to rival City High in the regional final.

New era for CCA football

Matt Hughes and Clippers build on strong foundation as they look forward

By Chris Umscheid
North Liberty Leader
TIFFIN– When the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers varsity football team takes the field Friday, Sept. 30, to open the 2013 season, there will be a host of new faces on the sidelines. For the first time in seven years, Rodney Walls won’t be leading the men in blue and white. Walls resigned after the 2012 season, which saw the Clippers improve to a 4-5 record from 2011’s 0-9 showing.

Young athletes get a chance to run, bike, swim and shine

NORTH LIBERTY– To have nearly 100 athletes participate in a local triathlon event is successful by any measure; to note that all of them are between the ages and 6 and 14 is more remarkable.
North Liberty’s second annual Just Tri Youth Triathlon was held Sunday, Aug. 4, with three separate age brackets in varied biking, swimming and running distances.
Even co-director Katie Gerot– also the aquatics supervisor for the North Liberty Recreation Department– said 98 kids signed up for this year’s event.
“It was nice to have such great support from the community,” said Gerot.
