Petition pushes for supervisors to be elected by district

JOHNSON COUNTY– Petitioners pushing for a new way to elect county supervisors are getting closer to their goal.
According to Debra Thornton, chair of the Johnson County Republicans, members of the Committee for Fair Representation– the group that organized the petition drive– are “well on their way” to gathering the 7,619 valid signatures required to call for a public vote on the matter.


Spartans defeat West Liberty

Solon moves to 10-2-2 after tie with Assumption

SOLON– The Spartans took on two powerhouses in one day and came out without a loss last week.
The boys’ soccer squad defeated West Liberty 3-1 at West Liberty Saturday and then traveled to Davenport Assumption later that day for a scoreless tie.
Tim Lance scored twice for the Spartans and Nick Brown added a goal on a penalty kick against the Comets. Brandan Childs was credited with an assist. Joe Weeks had four saves in the goal.
Weeks had five saves in the 0-0 battle against Assumption.
The two games capped a successful week for the Solon boys.


Lady Spartans shut-out Maquoketa, Central DeWitt

SOLON– The Lady Spartans fell to the No. 1 team last week, but followed it up with two home conference victories.
Solon’s girls defeated Maquoketa 2-0 and Central DeWitt 1-0 last week after being beaten by No. 1 Davenport Assumption on the road last Monday.
Assumption handed the Lady Spartans a 5-0 loss in Davenport, but Solon remained ranked ninth in Class 1A, according to the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU).

Lady Spartans double-up the competition at Monticello Invite

Team depth, placing in all 19 events– including wins in eight– had the Lady Spartans doubling up again April 30 at the Monticello Invitational. Solon cashed in with double-place winners in eight of the 12 individual events.
The girls rolled to196 points, more than twice what runner up Anamosa (73) could muster. They, Monticello (72), Mount Vernon (69) and West Branch (59.5) chased each other, battled for second through fifth place. Rounding out the field were Regina (34), North Cedar (32), Dyersville Beckman (29½) and Prince of Peace-Clinton (10).

Local woman shares marathon experience

NORTH LIBERTY– A runner for 13 years, none of the races previously undertaken by Iowa City pharmacist Stacy Sommers ended quite like the one on April 15, the most prestigious of America’s footraces, the Boston Marathon.
Moreover, this was Sommer’s very first Boston Marathon.

Council hesitant to repeat flood damage

SOLON– What will happen to Randall Park?
Damage caused by the flooding of Mill Creek in April has rendered Randall Park unusable, and council members began considering options at a meeting last week.
The tone was not hopeful for a short-term solution.
Facing a minimum of $25,000 in repairs and the possibility of a $100,000 project to protect the vulnerable area, council members recommended the cancelation of June events at the park and its shelter.


SCSD to recognize retiring teachers May 15

SOLON– The Solon Community School District will be hosting a retirement open house for two long-time teachers Wednesday, May 15, from 4 until 6 p.m. at Lakeview in the media center.
First grade teacher Tama Hemann has been at Lakeview since 1974, and second grade teacher Diane Kopp has taught in Solon for 23 years.
Other retirees unable to attend include Chris Weber (Special Education Associate Lakeview), Karen Pregon (Reading Recovery and Title I reading Lakeview), Karen Clingerman (Media Associate at the High School).


Open house for Jean and Bob Stinocher May 15

SOLON– The Solon Senior Advocates will host an open house for Jean and Bob Stinocher to honor them as Solon seniors of the year. The event will be held at the Solon American Legion on Wednesday, May 15, from 3 until 5 p.m. Refreshments will be provided by American Legion groups, American Legion Auxiliary, Beef Days Committee and Senior Advocates.
