Louise McKinnie

Louise McKinnie, 83, Gladstone, Mo., died April 26, 2013. She was born in Bodeau, Ark., to Gussie and Grace Jinks on Dec. 1, 1929. She lived in Gladstone, Mo., for 55 years and was a member of Englewood Baptist Church. Louise was preceded in death by her son, Rick McKinnie. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Dean; children Larry of Holt, Mo., and Gary (Lori) McKinnie of Solon; many loving grandchildren including Alison McKinnie; great-grandchildren as well as sisters, Doris Rushing and Lawanda Langley of Conway, Ark.


Cletus Redlinger

Cletus R. Redlinger, 78, of Solon and longtime Iowa City resident, died Sunday, April 21, 2013, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.
Mass of Christian Burial was held April 25 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Solon with Reverend James Vrba officiating.
A rosary, followed by visitation was April 24 at Lensing Funeral Service in Iowa City. Burial was at St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Solon Fire Department, Friends of Solon Public Library, or St. Mary’s Church.


Darrell Wallace

Darrell Wallace, 74, of North Liberty and formerly of Oxford, died Sunday, April 21, 2013, at home surrounded by his family.
Funeral Mass was celebrated April 26 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oxford with the Rev. Edmond Dunn officiating. Burial was at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Cosgrove. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Darrell’s name.

There was a time when we went to the grocery store, handed the clerk our list, and waited while he gathered up the items, added up the prices on an adding machine and wrote out the bill, then we paid for our groceries while he packed our purchases into a bag or box and, if there were more than a few, carried them out to our car.

Drake detour includes nine Solon entries

As if three meets in a week wasn’t enough, Solon’s girls have qualified for nine events at this weekend’s nationally renowned Drake Relays. Though rare in most big name track meets, high school competition is a staple at Drake, with 16 events helping pack the stadium. Drake has sold out its Saturday sessions for over 30 years.
At the line for Solon this weekend will be its 4x100, 4x200, and 4x800 relays, as well as Lauren Benzing in the 1,500 and 3,000 meter races, Rylee Smith in the 100-meter hurdles, Jordan Smith in the long jump and Kara Misel in the shot put and discus.

SOLON– Solon’s Lady Spartans dominated the field against West Delaware Monday, April 15, winning 11-1 with 18 minutes still left in the second half. Spartan’s new sweeper, junior Vik Meade, proved herself worthy of the position. Top scorer, senior Alison McKinnie, had five goals and two assists, Junior Anna Seydel scored four goals with three assists.
Sophomore Ali Herdliska contributed a strong goal in the second half. Junior Madi Durr had a clean pass to junior Katie Vitosh who was able to make the last goal with a head shot.

Girls win big at home

SOLON– There’s a reason the 4x400-meter relay is the last event in a track meet. Combining sprinter speed, distance runner endurance and a little strategy... it often decides the outcome of the meet. And with finishes like Solon’s girls provided at the Denny Gruber Invitational last week, it gets the crowd on its feet and cheering before the lights go out and everybody heads home.

Thursday, May 2: Early dismissal, 1 p.m. for district in-service.
Thursday, May 16: Early dismissal, 1 p.m. for district in-service.
Sunday, May 19: Commencement exercises, HS gymnasium, 2 p.m.
Monday, May 27: Memorial Day holiday.
Monday, June 3: Last student day, 11:30 a.m. dismissal.

Lakeview Elementary ‘Party at the Park’ Kernels game April 28

SOLON– There will be a Lakeview Elementary “Party at the Park” at the Cedar Rapids Kernels game on Sunday, April 28. Gates open at 1 p.m. with the game starting at 2:05 p.m. Get a chance to throw out the first pitch or participate in on-field contests. There will be a “Halfway to Halloween Post-Game Helicopter Candy Drop.”
