Women of Troy win state XC qualifying meet

Skopec wins girls meet, Borde takes boys for Trojan runners

CEDAR FALLS– The Iowa City West High Women of Troy and West High Trojans will be competing in the 2014 Class 4A state cross country meet, set for Saturday, Nov. 1, at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge.
Both squads won their qualifying meets Thursday, Oct. 23, in Cedar Falls in a format that advances the top three teams and top 10 individuals.

Douglass to represent Clear Creek Amana at state X-Country

SOLON­– Eric Douglass, a junior, will be the sole Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clipper running in the state cross country meet, set for Saturday, Nov. 1, in Fort Dodge. Douglas posted a time of 16:57, good for eighth place, in a Class 3A state qualifying meet held Thursday, Oct. 23, in Solon.
The top three teams and top 10 individuals advance to the state meet.

Fairfield wins 27-14 to finish CCA’s regular season

FAIRFIELD– The Trojans of Fairfield pulled off a 27-14 upset win over the district champion Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers Friday, Oct. 24, to end the regular season. The win improved the Trojans to 4-2 in Class 3A District 5 (5-4 overall) while the Clippers dropped to 5-1 and 7-2.
The Trojans found the end zone first, scoring with three seconds remaining in the first quarter on a 29-yard pass and a successful extra point. They extended their 7-0 lead late in the second quarter with a 2-yard run and successful kick with 1:32 left in the half.

The fog of (gridiron) war

IOWA CITY– A 21-7 lead vaporized into the mist of a foggy night for the West High Trojans as they fell 38-24 to the Pleasant Valley (PV) Spartans Friday, Oct. 24, at home. The loss was doubly bitter for the Trojans as the Spartans claimed the Class 4A District 7 championship (with a 4-0 record in district play and 6-3 record overall), and did so on West High’s Senior Night.

IOWA CITY– Defense made the difference, said West High coach Randy Dolson. His Women of Troy swept Cedar Rapids Prairie 3-0 in a Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) match Tuesday, Oct. 21, at home. The win sweetened Senior Night where Madi Miller, Mikaela Morgan and Laynie Whitehead were honored for their contributions to West High volleyball.
West came from behind to take the first set 25-20 and overcame a late deficit to take the second set 25-22. The Women of Troy dominated the third set 25-12 for the win.

NORTH LIBERTY– For Phoebe Roberson, dry cleaning is about more than just caring for the clothes; it’s also about creating comfortable relationships.
She recalled a recent SonShine Dry Cleaners customer who struck up a conversation while dropping off a few items. Among other things, he mentioned that it was his wife’s birthday. When he returned for his order, Roberson remembered the familiar face and asked him how the birthday went.

Ballot contains $33.4 bond issue for courthouse annex

IOWA CITY– On Nov. 4, voters will once again decide the fate of Johnson County’s aging courthouse.
On the general election ballot for Johnson County voters is a proposed $33.4 million bond referendum to build a courthouse annex to improve the function of the facility.

Local Option Sales Tax a 10-year commitment

JOHNSON COUNTY– Next Tuesday, Nov. 4, Johnson County voters will determine the fate of a proposed Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) in their communities.
If approved by a majority vote, taxpayers within each approving jurisdiction will pay one cent more on qualified purchases beginning July 1, 2015, taking sales tax from 6 cents to 7 cents on the dollar. The tax will be limited to 10 years if it passes. Passage requires a majority of votes, or 50 percent plus one.

Seniors invited to CCA dinner Nov. 8

TIFFIN– On Saturday, Nov. 8, beginning at 6 p.m., the Clear Creek Amana Student Assistance Team will hold its annual Senior Supper. Anyone over the age of 55 is invited to attend, and spend a few hours with 20 or 30 of the best kids you will ever meet. The meal includes ham, turkey and covered dishes. Bring your appetite and share your experiences with our students. We have been know to play some euchre and hearts as well. NL Legion Auxiliary to host free Vets Day dinner Nov. 11

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty American Legion Auxiliary will host a Veterans Day dinner on Tuesday, Nov. 11, beginning at 6 p.m. at South Slope’s community room, 980 N. Front St., North Liberty.
The evening will include a home-cooked meal, videos, music by Heritage Christian School, military ceremonies and a guest speaker, Roy Romans from the Iowa City Veterans Administration Medcial Facility. Colors will be advanced by the Solon American Legion Color Guard, and a bugler from Boy Scout Tropp 216 will accompany the ceremony.
Door prizes will be presented throughout the evening.
