It’s snow fun anymore

The earliest winters I remember were spent in the neighborhood where we lived until I was in third or fourth grade. Our streets weren’t plowed after a snowfall, instead, most people had chains on their tires to aid traction on the streets which soon became slick with packed snow. Many of the older boys indulged themselves with a free ride, belly-flopping with their sleds onto the road behind a passing car and grabbing the rear bumper to be towed at a fast clip for blocks at a time.

According to Superintendent Sam Miller, three minor injuries were reported to school children. “Parents of all students on the bus were notified of the accident,” Miller said in a press release. “Students were transferred to a different bus and taken home.”

IOWA CITY– The West High bowlers started the 2014-2015 season with a split against the Saints of Cedar Rapids Xavier Tuesday, Nov. 25, at Colonial Lanes in Iowa City.
The Women of Troy took the varsity match 2,056-1,786 and were led by Erica Roth’s 345, while the Trojans fell 2,881-2,843. Patrick Wood led West with a 491. The junior varsity boys also lost to the Saints 2,345-2,180 and were led by Ryan Stark and his match-high 373. The Saints did not bring a girls junior varsity squad, however the West JV girls had three bowlers in action led by Asha Irani’s 201.

Gridiron warriors earn INA All-State honors

West, CCA represented in sports writers’ picks

North Liberty Leader
DES MOINES– The Iowa Newspaper Association (INA) announced its 2014 All-State Football Teams Tuesday, Nov. 25. Sports writers from across the state on the INA’s selection committee made their picks for Class A, 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A and 8-man.
Iowa City West High’s John Milani and Oliver Martin were named, as was Clear Creek Amana’s Drew Wagner.

Young Clippers ready to rumble on the mats

North Liberty Leader
TIFFIN– It’s no exaggeration to say this year’s Clear Creek Amana varsity wrestling squad is a “young team.”
Half the squad is made up of freshmen.
Jared Carder, in his fourth year as the head coach for the Clippers, faces an interesting dilemma. On the one hand, he has the most guys going out for wrestling than at any point in his tenure. On the other, 14 out of 26 wrestlers are freshmen. Three seniors are back in the line-up: Connor Murphy, Daniel Brechtel and A.J. Schropp. Murphy took third in district competition last year.

West’s Women of Troy open with road win

North Liberty Leader
MASON CITY– The Iowa City West High Women of Troy opened the 2014-2015 season with a 69-61 win on the road in Mason City Tuesday, Nov. 25.
West High was led by Dani Craig, who sat out all of last season with an injury, and her 25-point effort. Ali Tauchen was the only other West player in double digits with 10 points.
West was ranked fifth in Class 5A preseason rankings by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU) and finished the 2013-14 season with a 12-11 record. The Mohawks were ranked 10th by the IGHSAU.

Double OT

Clipper girls open the season with dramatic win

By Chris Umscheid
North Liberty Leader
TIFFIN– PJ Sweeney’s debut as the new head coach for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers couldn’t have been more dramatic.
After trailing by two points at the end of the first half, the Clippers and Mount Vernon Mustangs tied at the end of regulation play Nov. 25 to send the game into overtime.
But one overtime period wasn’t enough; it took two to settle the game, 83-71, for Sweeney’s and the Clippers’ first win of the season.

Clipper girls chart a new course

CCA girls set sail for success

TIFFIN– Once again, the girl’s varsity basketball team at Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School finds itself with a new head coach after Matt Haas’ departure last spring. However, rather than an outsider coming in, the ladies are now led by former assistant coach P.J. Sweeney. It’s an opportunity for a new direction for the program, which has seen three coaches in the past six years and finished last season at 5-16 overall and 5-13 for seventh place in the WaMaC West Division.
