Gerdin family gifts $300,000 to Ronald McDonald Family Room at St. Luke’s

CEDAR RAPIDS– Hundreds of families with hospitalized children will be the beneficiaries of a major gift from the Gerdin Family Foundation. The family is gifting $300,000 to St. Luke’s Foundation for the creation of the Ronald McDonald Family Room®, which is currently under construction on the second floor of St. Luke’s Center for Women’s and Children’s Health. The Foundation will use $100,000 of the gift to open an endowment to support future capital needs as there will always be a demand for this type of facility for the families of critically-ill children.

Girl Scouts donate to pantry

Hoover Trail extended to Solon in 2016?

Johnson County Conservation Board members received a little light reading for the holidays, as 10 engineering firms submitted RFP (Request For Proposal) responses for work to extend the Hoover Nature Trail 5.9 miles from Seven Sisters Road (Linn-Johnson County line) to Solon. The Board will whittle down the contenders in early January and plan to sign a contract late in the month. Trail construction would likely begin in 2016.

IOWA CITY– Trail users in Johnson County could have reason to rejoice in 2016 as plans are laid to close a major gap in the Hoover Nature Trail.

Free Christmas meal at Our Lord’s Church

SOLON– Our Lord’s Church will be serving a free Christmas meal Thursday, Dec. 25. All are welcome. Reservations are not required but would be helpful. The meal will be served at noon at the church, 131 N. Market St., Solon. Rides and deliveries are also available. Betty Proe

Betty Fisher Proe, 83, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 14, 2014, at Briarwood Health Care Center in Iowa City after a lengthy illness. A gathering of family and friends to celebrate Betty’s life was held from on Wednesday, Dec. 17, at Lensing Funeral Home. Private family burial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Iowa City Hospice, The Salvation Army or to Essence of Life Hospice. Margie Paulsen

Margie Ann Paulsen, age 84, of Durant, died on Thursday, Dec. 11, 2014, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City. 
Margie was born on Feb. 4, 1930, the seventh child of Clarence and Mary (Doran) Budelier, in Wilton. She grew up in rural Durant with her two sisters and four brothers. She graduated from Durant High School in 1948, attended Iowa State Teachers’ College and enjoyed teaching in a one-room country schoolhouse named Yankee Hollow. She met Bill D. Paulsen at the Knoops Hall in Stockton and later they were married on May 20, 1950, in Wilton. 

Evelyn Lipcamon

Evelyn Marie Lipcamon, 78 of Solon, died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2014, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Funeral Mass took place on Thursday, Dec. 18, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Solon. Burial followed in Oakland Cemetery.

Dale Harker

Dale D. Harker, 83, lifetime resident of Oxford, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2014, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a short illness.
Funeral services took place on Saturday, Dec. 20, at the St. Mary’s Auditorium in Oxford, with burial with military honors to follow at the Oxford Cemetery. Linda Hamer

Linda L. Hamer, daughter of Ivan and Opal “Izetta” (Wild) Helbig, was born Sept. 29, 1943, in Cedar Rapids, and died Dec. 12, 2014, at her home in Ely, under the loving care of Unity Point Hospice and her family and friends. She was 71 years of age.
A funeral service took place at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Burial was at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Linda was raised and attended school in Cedar Rapids. She graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School, class of 1961.

Logan Grant

Logan David Grant, 14, son of David and Annette Grant, brother of Ryan, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2014, at St. Luke’s Hospital. Funeral Mass was Dec. 15, at St. Ludmila Catholic Church. Burial followed in Czech National Cemetery.
