200-yard medley relay– IC West.

FORT DODGE– Iowa City West High sent both the Trojans and Women of Troy to the 2014 Iowa High School Cross Country Championship held Saturday, Nov. 1, in Fort Dodge in a bid for the Class 4A title.
Johnston won the girls meet, while the Women of Troy were fourth in team points. Linn-Mar won the boys 4A meet with the Trojans finishing ninth overall. Megan Schott from Des Moines Roosevelt won the girls meet in 14:11.6 and Daniel Soto of West Des Moines Valley High won the boys meet in 15:24.2.

CEDAR RAPIDS– The road to the UNI-Dome and a bid for a state football championship in Class 4A for the Iowa City West High Trojans ended at Kingston Stadium in Cedar Rapids as the Trojans’ nemesis, the Cedar Rapids Washington Warriors, rolled over them 44-19 in a quarterfinal round game Friday, Nov. 7.
“This is the one team that can match up with our guys and they certainly did that,” West coach Garrett Hartwig said, noting, “we were just out-matched a little bit, and the credit goes to Wash.” Hartwig said, “(the Warriors) have just so many guys that can get you.”

IC West volleyball falls in first round

Women of Troy end 2014 season with a 28-12 record

CEDAR RAPIDS– Unranked Iowa City West did what it could to put a dent in No. 1 Bettendorf’s perfect record.
But after winning the second set and tying the Class 5A first round match 1-1, West could go no farther in the state volleyball tournament.
The Women of Troy dropped out of the Class 5A tournament with a 3-1 loss to Bettendorf in opening round action Tuesday, Nov. 11, at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids.
West battled tough in the first set, taking advantage of six Bettendorf attack errors before falling, 25-21.

Clipper girls see first state tourney since 1999 for CCA

MARENGO– After watching the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) football team make history this fall with the most wins in a season, a district championship and a play-off appearance, it was the volleyball team’s turn to add a new chapter in Clipper history.
The ladies earned their first trip to the State Volleyball Tournament since 1999 with a 3-0 sweep of Cedar Rapids Xavier at Iowa Valley High School in Marengo on Tuesday, Nov. 4.
The Clippers were listing early in the first set, down 1-6, which prompted coach Jackie Clubb to call an early time out.

Friends, family to host benefit for seven-year-old Tauke Nov. 15

NORTH LIBERTY– On Saturday, Nov. 15, friends and family will host a benefit fundraiser for “Big G,” Griffin Tauke. Griffin, the son of Kelsey and Scott Tauke, is a seven year old diagnosed with alveolar soft part sarcoma– a rare type of cancer. The fundraiser will assist with the family’s medical expenses and support Griffin’s treatment at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Last weekend for outdoor burning

TIFFIN– Citywide burning will end Nov. 16. Burning is only allowed during daylight hours on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays between now and then. Fires must be attended at all times, with a water supply nearby. Please help keep the community safe by abiding by the open burning rules.

Chamber’s ‘Buy Here Holiday Blitz’ promotes local spending, Small Business Saturday 2014

IOWA CITY– Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and the holiday shopping season will soon be upon us. This year, the Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce’s new Buy Here Holiday Blitz is offering consumers six chances to win $500 cash. Starting today, consumers will earn ticket chances by dining and shopping locally at participating businesses.
Winning ticket numbers will be announced live on KXIC-AM 800 at 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 29, Dec. 6 and Dec.13. There will be two chances per Saturday for customers to win cash prizes.

NL residents can compost food for curbside pickup

NORTH LIBERTY– Curbside composting is now available to all North Liberty residents interested in reducing waste.
The program, which began its test run last month with just seven households, has now expanded to the rest of the city, with over 70 families signed up to participate already.
Tracey Mulcahey, North Liberty Assistant City Administrator, feels the program is just a smart idea for those looking to be more eco-friendly.
