Zombie apocalypse no match for ZASC team

NORTH LIBERTY– Are you ready for the attack of the killer zombies?
Even if you don’t believe in that possibility, there are other potential disasters– catastrophic floods, dangerous storms, or a power grid failure, for example– that could devastate neighborhoods, communities or entire regions in a matter of hours.
Whatever the cause, Guy Cain, John Watson and their team of survival specialists want you to be prepared for any eventuality. The two conducted a day-long survival skills workshop at the North Liberty Recreation Center on Saturday, Oct. 25, to an audience of about 20.

New police officer to cover NL school beat

NLPD will gain personnel through $125K COPS grant

NORTH LIBERTY– Like the community it serves, the North Liberty Police Department (NLPD) is growing again.
The force, currently with 17 full-time officers, was recently awarded a federal, three-year Community Oriented Police Support (COPS) COPS Hiring Program (CHP) grant in the amount of $125,000 to hire an additional officer.

No. 2 Lady Spartans sweep Northeast Goose Lake in Class 3A regional semifinal

SOLON– There was no slow start to this one.
Solon’s volleyball team dealt a 25-4 loss to Northeast Goose Lake in the first set of a Class 3A Region 7 semifinal Oct. 30 in Solon, and went on to sweep the Rebels for a chance at a state tournament berth.
The win put the Lady Spartans in the Region 7 final against Dyersville Beckman Tuesday, Nov. 4, in Center Point (see sidebar).

Lady Spartans sweep Beckman in regional final

CENTER POINT– The Lady Spartans are headed back to the state volleyball tournament.
Solon defeated Dyersville Beckman 3-0 Tuesday night, Nov. 4, at Center Point to capture the Class 3A Region 7 championship and a berth in the 3A state tournament which begins Wednesday, Nov. 10, at the US Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids.

Rainy Monday gets Solon down

MANCHESTER– Against Davenport Assumption last Wednesday, the big play helped Solon.
At West Delaware Monday night, the big play hurt.
And the second half turned out to be pivotal in both.
The Solon football team fell out of the Class 3A playoffs with a 28-14 loss at Manchester Nov. 3, and concluded the season with a 9-2 record.
The Hawks held the Spartans scoreless in the second half after Solon had taken a 14-12 lead into halftime.

Supervisors like NL-based Moxie solar company

County gives consensus for powering Secondary Roads building

NORTH LIBERTY– A dawning North Liberty business has just been granted a bright opportunity.
The Johnson County Board of Supervisors sought renewable energy sources to power its new Secondary Roads building. Moxie Solar, based in North Liberty, was one of five entities to submit proposals on the project. The county narrowed its choice to three companies, and during the board’s Oct. 9 discussion, Moxie Solar came out on top.
Jason Hall, founder of Moxie Solar, said his company is eager to work with the county.

SOLON– Right now, Marjorie Lane’s students are doing a little bit of wedding planning.
Some are trying to decide if their budget affords a destination wedding while others are planning a more intimate hometown affair. They’re drawing up their budgets and figuring out if they can do without that fancy photographer and lavish flowers.

Swisher WILOS hosting Ladies Day Out Saturday, Nov. 8 at Legion

SWISHER– The Women’s Improvement League of Swisher (WILOS) is hosting a new fun-filled Ladies Day Out on Saturday, Nov. 8, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the American Legion in Swisher.
