Harold Moffit

Harold Elroy Moffit, 78, died Monday, May 12, 2014, at Manor Care in Cedar Rapids. A Celebration of Life Service was held May 16, at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English. Elder Alan Trumpold officiated. Burial was in the Piersol Cemetery, rural North English. A general memorial fund has been established.

Robert Lary

Robert “Bob” George Lary, 80, of Muscatine, died on Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at Lutheran Homes. Celebration of Life Service was held May 17 at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. Graveside Services were held on May 19 at the Oakhill Cemetery in Central City. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice. Bob’s favorite charities were the Paralyzed Veterans of America and the Disabled American Veterans.

Margie Knoedel

Margie Ann Knoedel, 63, of Bloomington, died peacefully on Friday, May 9, 2014. Margie was born July 24, 1950, to Joseph and Marguerite Knoedel of Iowa City. Margie attended City High and went on to earn her undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Iowa. Most of her library career was spent at the Hennepin County Library System. She held many positions and retired as principal librarian. Margie will be remembered for her kindness, her infectious laughter, her thoughtfulness, and the joy and love she brought to others.

Sharon Sue (Roehrkasse) Kachmitterv

Sharon Sue (Roehrkasse) Kaschmitter, 73, passed away surrounded by family on April 9, 2014. Her death was due to a traumatic head injury caused by a fall. She was born on Aug. 23, 1940, to Laurence and Marjorie Roehrkasse in Williamsburg.
Matthew and Sharon were married Nov. 30, 1963, and they shared 50 vibrant years together.

Grace Herbert

Grace P. Herbert, 90, passed away May 14, 2014, at Living Center West. Services were held May 17 at Teahen Funeral Home by Pastor Diane Townsley. Burial was at St. John Cemetery.
Grace is survived by three daughters, Rena (Andy) Nevada of Solon, Patricia (Christian) Rhodes of Cedar Rapids, and Sarah (Dave) Hartwig of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren Marlene Drake, Marck Dudrey, Erik Dudrey, Brian Dudrey, Travis Hartwig and Coady Hartwig; and seven great-granddaughters.
Preceding her in death was her husband Robert W. Herbert, her parents, and four brothers.

Abraham Harris

Abraham James Harris, two, son of Jeff and Amber, went home to heaven on Monday, May 12, 2014. Funeral services for Abe were held May 16 at Grace Community Church in North Liberty, with the Rev. David Kirk officiating. Burial was at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the University of Iowa Foundation, 1 West Park Road, Iowa City 52240 in Abraham’s name for the UI Children’s Hospital or the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

Wayne Fjelstad

Wayne A. Fjelstad, 75, of Iowa City, died Friday, May 9, 2014, surrounded by his family.
Funeral services were held May 13 at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service with burial following at Oakland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Wayne’s memory. Online condolences may be sent for his family through the web at www.gayanciha.com.

Allen Conrad

Allen Conrad, 73, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, May 11, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids. Spiritual services were held May 16 at the Peace United Church in Monticello. Inurnment services were at Riverside Gardens, Anamosa.

No remembrance of hot wings can be complete without a nod to Buffalo Wild Wings (BWW). It started in 1981 when a James Disbrow moved from wing Mecca (Buffalo, New York) to an abyss (Kent, Ohio). Unable to find a decent wing in the Buckeye State, he decided to open his own restaurant. One thing led to another, and today there are more than a thousand locations with a half-billion dollars in assets.

Food for Thought

For the past year or two, I’ve been receiving frequent offers of reduced cost or free hearing evaluations from a company in Cedar Rapids. They seem to be under the impression that I am losing my hearing and need a hearing aid. Now, I will confess to complaining that I sometimes miss a few of the words people say at meetings and social gatherings, but I don’t think it is my auditory faculties that are the reason.
