Marshek drainage still unresolved

By Paul Deaton
Solon Economist
SOLON– Having filed the annual budget with the county and state, the city council made a to-do list for 2014 and began working on it with a discussion of storm water drainage in the Marshek and Eastwood subdivision at its March 19 meeting.

County imposes weight and speed limits on Mehaffey Bridge

What’s shaking?

JOHNSON COUNTY– Cars should travel a little slower across Mehaffey Bridge now, and big trucks will have to detour around it until a new bridge is complete.
The Johnson County Secondary Roads department placed a weight embargo on the bridge and reduced the speed effective March 11, due to too much movement as cars were driving over the bridge that is currently under construction.

Long tenured administrator accepts Florida post

Lippincott leaving for warmer weather

SOLON– It’s been over eight years since Cassandra Lippincott first said hello to Solon.
Now it’s time to say goodbye.
Lippincott, the city’s third city administrator and its longest tenured, announced last week she has accepted a position with the city of Wildwood, Fla., and will be leaving in April.
Lippincott came to head up Solon’s city government in November 2005, following in the footsteps of the first city administrator, Brandy Forbes, and her successor, Tracey Mulcahey.
The city created the position in the spring of 2000.

Last man standing

By Don Lund

Tony Ramos has been one of the most exciting wrestlers at Iowa for the last four years. The 133-pound senior from Illinois was missing two things– a Big Ten championship and an NCAA title.
Two weeks ago he won his first Big Ten title and last Saturday at Oklahoma City he picked up his first NCAA championship.
Tony scored two nearfall points in the first tiebreak to defeat Wisconsin’s fifth-seeded Tyler Graff, 3-1, in overtime.

Hawkeye women win big

Hawk Talk

By Don Lund
Sports Writer
Iowa rolled over the Marist Red Foxes, 87-65, Sunday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena for a first-round victory in the NCAA tournament.
The game was supposed to be close because the Red Foxes had five players averaging in double figures like the Hawks. They were 27-6 coming into the game, Iowa was 26-8, they were a good passing team and played good defense.
There were a few things missing.

Sunny Arizona

Walkin'

Sabra and I are spending a couple of weeks in sunny Arizona. Before her stroke, we planned to go on a Habitat For Humanity build in El Salvador followed be a week in Belize. Best laid plans often go astray, however, and we spent the time in a hospital instead.
Sabra is well on the road to recovery although her energy and strength are diminished. Like always, warm, sunny weather invigorates her (and me) so we decided a trip here was in order.
Thank God for the ghost money.

Are we all wet?

Food for Thought

I remember being told I was “all wet” when I was completely mistaken about something– as when I was positive that there was, somewhere down there around Tennessee or Arkansas, a state named Dixie. People talked about it as if it were a state; there were even songs about it. It took a lot of proof to convince me that I was totally wrong. I’m not sure where the expression “all wet” came from, but my dictionary includes “badly mistaken” as a distinct and specific use of the term.
