CCA Get-Ready-for-College Night to be held Feb. 23

TIFFIN– Clear Creek Amana (CCA) will host a Get Ready for College Night on Tuesday, Feb. 23, at 7 p.m. in the CCA High School (location TBD). A representative from the University of Iowa (four-year public), Mount Mercy University (four-year private), and Kirkwood Community College will address what parents and students need to know about preparing for the senior year and what steps parents and students can take to be ready to start the college application process once the senior year gets going.

Sign up now for NLYBS youth baseball, softball 2016 season

NORTH LIBERTY– Registration for the North Liberty Youth Baseball and Softball (NLYBS) 2016 season is open. Children can be signed up for the program at www.eteamz.com/NLYBS. Registration must be completed by March 1.

North Liberty Optimists host pancake breakfast March 5

NORTH LIBERTY– The Optimist Club of North Liberty will host its 43rd annual pancake breakfast from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 5, in the North Liberty Community Center gymnasium, 520 W. Cherry St.
Proceeds will benefit more than a dozen North Liberty youth programs, as all Optimist clubs have a mission to be “friends of youth.”

North Liberty Mayor Amy Nielsen announces run for State Representative in Johnson County

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty Mayor Amy Nielsen announced she will run for State Representative in House District 77, which encompasses Western and Southern Johnson County, including the cities of North Liberty, Tiffin, Oxford, Swisher, Shueyville and Lone Tree.

Busing change win for some, loss for others

ICCSD eliminates current discretionary busing; will redistribute to at-risk students

IOWA CITY– The Iowa City Community School District Board of Directors voted unanimously to make changes to discretionary busing at its Jan. 26 meeting, in order to maximize access for elementary-aged children with socioeconomic barriers in getting to school.

Fun bests the blahs in first annual Beat the Bitter Winter Games

NORTH LIBERTY– Although Midwesterners, Iowans are apparently not very good at winter.
That was the beginning of a discussion that ended with a plan for action to create “Beat the Bitter Winter Games and Good Cheer,” North Liberty’s newest community celebration.
The inaugural event took place Saturday, Feb. 6, with activities to encourage area residents to come outside, get moving, spark some new friendships and warm up to winter as best they could.

CCA’s Kuehl laments state’s lack of commitment to education

TIFFIN– Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Superintendent Tim Kuehl prepared for the district’s upcoming budget talks by submitting a wish list for staffing.
It included increasing the number of elementary teachers, elementary art and music teachers; increasing the number of high school and middle school guidance counselors; and adding staff in the high school band and ELP (English Language Proficiency) programs.
Kuehl acknowledged it was an optimistic list.

Lady Spartans fall to Mt. Vernon, but win quarterfinal over Anamosa

MOUNT VERNON– The Lady Spartan took to the road, for the final time in the regular season, traveling to meet the Mount Vernon Mustangs on Monday, Feb. 8. The temperatures were bitter, as was the defeat handed to the Solon ladies, 61-49.

4 wrestlers to Des Moines

Carr, Fritz, Nelson and Diltz qualify for state

DeWITT– Four Solon wrestlers will take their best shots beginning Thursday at the 2016 2A State Wrestling Tournament.
Ben Carr (126 pounds), Cole Fritz (145), Trevor Nelson (160) and Dillon Diltz (170) all qualified for state at the district meet Feb. 13, at Central Clinton of DeWitt.
Carr, Fritz and Nelson each reigned over the weight classes with first place finishes, while Diltz came in second.
Three Solon wrestlers– Christian Haight (113), Zack Bevans (132) and Graeson Dall (152)– just missed the cut by finishing third.

Spotlight Spaghetti Dinner March 7

SOLON– Mark the calendar for Monday, March 7, for the annual Solon Spotlight Spaghetti Dinner and Musical Showcase. The dinner will be held in the Solon High School commons. The menu includes: spaghetti, salad, bread, drink and dessert. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under and student performers. Serving times are 4:45-7 p.m. Diners will enjoy the middle school jazz band and solos/ensembles from middle school and high school students.
