Archery Team’s maiden tournament a huge success

SOLON– The Solon Archery Team held its first tournament Saturday, Jan. 23, at Solon High School. The event saw nearly 500 archers from around Eastern Iowa compete starting at 8 a.m. with a flight of 50 archers every hour, and the final flight at 5 p.m. With perennial powers Anamosa and Bellevue shooting early in the day, the Spartans were able to take aim and draw a tie with Anamosa for first place in points (3,296). Unfortunately, the tie-breaker did not land in the Spartans’ favor as Anamosa shot four more bullseyes than Solon.

The project’s purpose is to make the sidewalks compliant with the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990. The DOT will need to acquire temporary easements from the properties along the project in order to construct the sidewalks. Construction is proposed for the summer of 2017. There will be no cost to the property owners for these improvements.

Grease on down the road

Fats and oils clogging up in winter weather

SOLON– Have you heard?
Grease is the word.
And the City of Solon would like you to stop putting it down the drain.
Fats, oils and grease (FOG) are accumulating in the city’s sewer system, and when they reach the treatment plant during cold spells, it’s causing difficulties.
As a result, Public Works Director Scott Kleppe is hoping to educate the public about alternate disposal methods.

Hawkeyes alone on top

Hawk Talk

Iowa went into the weekend tied with Maryland and Indiana for first place in the Big Ten.
The Terrapins lost on Saturday at Wisconsin, Indiana lost Sunday afternoon at Michigan State and Iowa beat Minnesota on Sunday night, but first…
Here we go again.
The Hawkeye women’s and men’s basketball teams played last Thursday night… at almost the same time. The women’s game started at 7:30 p.m., the men at 8 p.m.
The good news is that they were both on television, the bad news is that both teams lost.
I’ll start with the women.
